Devil in False Colors, by Jack Winnick, is a thrilling read. After the brutal slaughter of five young Jewish boys at a school in California, Joint Terrorist Task Force agent Lara Edmond of the FBI and Mossad agent Uri Levin are called in to help. Terrorists whose goal to remove Jewish influence from the holy land of Palestine are suspected in the attack. This time, though, things are a bit more complicated. It's not as simple as Muslims versus Jews. Now, the two different groups of Muslims are involved: the Sunni and the Shia. Lara and Uri must go undercover to avoid any more bloodshed. The romantic relationship the two shared in the past only complicates things.

What I liked most about the book was any scenes involving Lara and Uri. Having read other books by Winnick, I already knew a lot about the two of them. It was interesting to see how each reacted during their undercover assignments. Because they're both likable characters, I became invested in their stories.

What I liked least about this book was how disgusting some of the descriptions were. Winnick is a talented author. His words paint a picture in your mind. Several times, however, it wasn't a picture I wanted to see. In one instance, "tiny, headless bodies were strewn around the room." Another time a gunshot wound caused "spewing blood and other bodily fluids onto the sidewalk." The worst for me, though, was when an eye burst, and "viscous fluid" spurted out. It was just too much for me.

This book is written for an adult audience. There is violence, gruesome descriptions, death, some swearing, and sex. A mature teen could probably handle it as well. Also, in order to enjoy this book, the reader should have some interest in history and current events. The author goes into a lot of detail about the background of the Arab-Israeli conflict. If you don't like history, this could be boring.

I would rate Devil in False Colors three out of four stars. I can't give it a four, because I got bored reading most of the parts that didn't include Lara or Uri. I wish there had been more about them! I wouldn't give it any lower, though, because overall, I did enjoy the book. It was also well-written and professionally edited.

Although Devil in False Colors is actually the third book in a series involving Lara and Uri, it works as a stand-alone novel. I highly recommend it!
