Review by sanksras -- East Wind, 2nd edition
When I stumbled upon East Wind, 2nd edition by Jack Winnick, I knew I had to read it. It had everything that I looked for in a novel; an espionage thriller with a little bit of romance. And when I found out that this was a series of books, I was jumping with joy!
The protagonists in this book are 41-year old Uri and 31-year-old Lara. Uri Levin is an Israeli Mossad agent, who has helped his nation deal with Arab terrorist groups. Lara Edmond is an FBI agent, who administers an online system. This online system intercepts suspicious emails and helps apprehend terrorists on the dark web. Both Israel's and the USA's interests are unified when a terrorist bombing leads to a nuclear threat. Uri and Lara must work together to prevent another outbreak from taking place and stop the alliance of these countries from collapsing.
On the other hand, there is Walid. From the young age of 16, Walid Jahangiri has been taught to obey the terrorist group, Hezbollah and its notorious leader, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah. After immigrating to the United States and settling in with his girlfriend Sara, he starts realizing the harsh truth of his beliefs. What will happen when he is assigned to plant a fission bomb? Will he fight for his initial beliefs? Or will he change sides with the innocent lives that will be lost?
Jack Winnick has written an erratic and exhilarating story. The narrative perspective of the story switches between many characters but is written in the third person. The most appealing thing about this novel was the backstories and environments of the characters. They were very realistic and kept me engrossed in the book at all times. These descriptions helped me understand why the characters did what they did. It showed the reader both sides of the story and the emotions behind it. Usually, stories like these are written in the perspective of the hero, so I was pleased to find something new.
Additionally, there was a lot of historical and political information that made this book informative as well as engaging. Not only was there historical information but also technical information about nuclear weapons and chemicals. This information made it helpful to understand the strategy and planning that the protagonists did at a better level.
Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars for its gripping plot and well-described characters. There were some grammatical errors, but not enough to affect the content of the book. There were very few profanities and almost no sexual content. I would recommend it to anyone who loves international thrillers, mysteries involving the government and occasional romance. I will surely check out the next book in this series.
