The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in “The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries,” by Brian O’Hare. This fast-paced thriller is set in Northern Ireland and follows a police team as they set about trying to catch a cold-blooded murderer.

There are gruesome killings with many suspects. Under investigation is a group of highly influential and wealthy individuals, including judges, teachers, doctors, and successful businessmen and women. They are all members of a secretive and illegal club, whose aim is to satisfy the debauched cravings of its clientele. The seedy activities of this club make the members' prime targets for blackmail, thereby handing them all motives for committing murder.

What makes this an original and interesting read is the inclusion of deep philosophical arguments used by the killer to justify the abhorrent crimes. The mysterious workings of the so-called "Dark Web" add a particularly sinister touch.

Pitted against this psychopath is the investigating police team, led by Inspector Sheehan. The police briefings give a vivid insight into the characters of these dedicated officers who all possess a strong sense of loyalty and respect for their boss. Sheehan, who refuses to be intimidated by power or wealth, displays the useful ability to read people. He carefully scrutinizes suspects’ eyes and facial expressions and is quick to pick up on the slightest nervous glance or pause, often doubting the truth of their words. Will this be enough to solve the mystery? Will the intellectual and investigative ability of Inspector Sheehan and his team be a match for the perpetrator of these crimes?

There are some amusing moments. I particularly enjoyed the unlikely relationship between Inspectors McCullough and McBride.

As suspects are ruled out the murderer is slowly revealed.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is chillingly suspenseful. The author cleverly draws the reader down blind alleys and throws in subtle clues to keep us guessing to the end.

This is not a book for the faint-hearted as there are descriptions of violent and sexual encounters. I would not recommend this book to anyone with a sensitive disposition.

I haven’t read the first three books but this was not a problem. It was easy to get immersed in the characters and story-line and I am now keen to read the previous books. It was helpful to be able to refer to the list of characters provided at the beginning.

I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and I award The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars.
