Review by JeriMorris -- A Trace of Revenge by Lyle Howard
In A Trace of Revenge Lyle Howard tells a story about how three strangers' lives are about to collide through a whirlwind of events. A mob boss trying to protect his deadly secret, a thief who stole a top secret high-tech piece of equipment from the military, and a boy who's life was shattered when he witnessed the gruesome murder of his parents, barely making it out alive himself. Matt Walker was left deaf and with a new found ability to trace an objects history through touch. He tries to adjust to a normal life while trying to figure out his new psychomerty ability. At a baseball game Matt is thrown back to that dreadful night just by one single touch. On a quest to find his parents killer Matt ends up on an extravagant cruise ship with a mob boss and a thief. As the truth comes forth from that terrible night Matt is met with the biggest surprise of his life.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I felt that it did not deserve four stars because there were many grammatical errors and several times where the author seemed to forget what he was writing about. When the doctor was talking to the admiral the names of the two main military ships get switched. When Matt was talking about how his grandfather didn't want to go to the game, they said his father instead of grandfather. There were two other main spots where this happens. When on the ship it was said that someone witnessed a terrible crime, when earlier it was said that they left the room before the crime was committed and it never mentioned that he went back in. Lastly when Matt and his girlfriend were on the ship talking to an older couple a man comes over and engages Matt in conversation being rude to the older couple and making them leave. Later on Matt comes back and talks to the older couple and they tell Matt that a man came and introduced himself like they've never seen him before when it was the same man from earlier that was rude to them. With these times of confusion I found it hard to follow. The overall plot was interesting and engaging to the reader earning it three out of four stars.
I absolutely loved the constant connection to baseball in this thriller. Not many books that I have read have made such a grand connection to sports while simultaneously being a nail biting thriller. The few thrillers that do connect with sports bring them into the story with a passing glance, where in this book every time you turn around there is a connection with baseball. I was also amazed by the way the author crept in humor in the intense scenes in the book. I would find myself reading faster in spots to find out what was going to happen then surprising myself by laughing at the little hints at humor hidden in the story.
There wasn't much about this book that I didn't like. I did find it a bit difficult to keep the several stories straight as the main plot of the story was coming together. The fact that each separate story was interesting and upbeat made it easier to keep reading. Your curiosity grows reading each back story wondering how they will all come together in the end.
The action pact scenes and the inquisitive moments leave the reader asking questions and trying to come up with answers before they are revealed. Readers who love crime and suspenseful thrillers will love this book. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more. The vulgar language along with the descriptive murder scenes will steer away those readers with a weakness for blood and gore.
