Review by MeenuAnnadurai -- Tujunga by Carlos Alvarado
Tujunga is a scientific thriller by Carlos Alvarado which initially starts with murder mystery of a scientist Xochi, whose death is mysteriously linked with the famous American manned space exploration mission to the moon. On the course of the investigation behind the murder, spine-chilling and threatening revelation about the mission and the government's part in it, will unveil gradually. These revelations are brought to the light by two different plot-lines filled with secrets and love stories.
Tujunga is a super-duper science fiction with lot of details and specifics about space mission and anthropology. Carlos Alvarado has definitely done a great job with his research about every scientific facts and inputs he had given in the book and it’s completely authentic as far as the scientific factual are concerned. The plot was so unique and fresh, the way the author has plotted the storyline with a perfect blend of reality and fiction was absolutely mind blowing because all the incidents denoted in the book were true incidents and in those he had inserted his part of fiction. The readers will not even feel for a second that they are reading a fiction, the story was that believable.
The time frame of the two plot lines are decades apart and so initially the narrative might seem quite confusing but within few pages into the book the readers will get acclimatized to the writing style. And also if the readers aren’t from science background or doesn’t have sound technical knowledge about space and anthropology then they are highly prone to feel straight out of the water but if you endure the first few pages you’ll understand everything in the due course.
The plot in itself was fantastic and the twist and turns the book took us on was nothing short of spectacular. As every tiny-winy thing unravelled it was nerve-racking and amazing at the same time. Absolutely the readers will have goosebumps all over their body while reading it. The book was so beautifully crafted and it had lots of love to offer. The way the lead characters love each other and their pure selfless love was heart touching. Despite being a scientific thriller Carlos Alvarado has lovingly inserted the love parts and it wasn’t irrelevant at all but as a matter of fact it was something which was much needed for the development of the book.
The character description was done at a greater depth and so there was no difficulty in empathizing the characters in the book. Character development played major role in this book, particularly a lead character in the book called Claudia was the significant one among all the characters because the way she developed as a person with each passing page was really inspiring and remarkable. She is my personal favorite. And also the characterisation of Curt was so good, he was somebody who could be easy idolized, he never fail to inspire people, he was innocent, soft, empathetic, determinant, responsible and what not? He had all the caliber to be named as the best human. There were couple of significant supporting characters as well in the book, who helped the lead character Robert in solving the murder mystery of his fiancée Xochi. These supporting characters had been penned down brilliantly and they laid the strong foundation to the plot.
On the whole, the book was absolutely mind-boggling. The narrative style was first class. The book was efficiently edited and so the final product was stunning. The flow of the book was flawless and coherent despite jumping from one time period to another. My rating for this book would be 4 out of 4 stars. There wasn’t a single thing that I would say I didn’t like about in this book. It was totally out of the world experience, quite literally with Tujunga, I’m not talking metaphorically. This book needs all the appreciation and attention in the world. I would recommend this book to all the sci-fic and thriller lovers, you guys should definitely read this book. If you are someone who likes gazing over at the sky or the moon or you are very fond of space and spaceships, this is book is exclusively tailor made for you. If you’re someone who hadn’t read a lot of sci-fic, then maybe you should start with this book. It was one of a kind spine-chilling scientific thriller, I have ever come across. I'm damn sure you will amazed by author's work without a doubt.
