I didn't want this book to finish, to be honest. Thank goodness there's a promised sequel to it, and I am eagerly waiting! All through this book, it felt like I was watching the characters play their parts from a vantage point. Desert Sanctuary by Fred G. Baker is a thriller that I won't hesitate to recommend to lovers of detective and crime stories.

This book kicks off immediately with action. The 'drug buy' staged by the Phoenix PD turns bloody with casualties on both sides. The West Side Gang came prepared with sophisticated gun power, and nobody expected the gang boss to show up in a rather small deal. The set up by the police wasn't tight enough as Detective Lori Sanchez would have wanted, but she had to follow orders. In the chaos that ensued, she walks into the murder scene of the gang boss and a top cop.

Sanchez pondered how being the first person to arrive at a murder scene, made her the murderer. She must, therefore, fight for her life and stop at nothing to prove her innocence. Father Montero, her good friend, also steps up to help her work the case and bring the perpetrators to book.

What a fascinating ride Fred has taken me on with this exciting plot. His narration was superb. The scenes, though fast-paced, were all thoughtfully laid out and are easy to follow. There is a deliberate intention to keep your heart thumping! I could be enjoying Father Montero's cooking this minute and find myself helping Sanchez dodge bullets the next minute. The suspense created by the author got me glued to my seat for hours and, I didn't even complain. Good job, Mr Fred!

There was no part of this book that I disliked, to be honest. I wondered, though, why a police officer wouldn't immediately call for back up at the first sign of danger. Well, I think she believed in her ability to lose her followers as she had done before. I also pondered why Sanchez's boyfriend, who was also a cop, didn't do much to help her out. However, these concerns did not stop me from enjoying the book. I have to warn those who have issues with people dying due to violence to skip this one. There are profanities too, but they seemed right in their context of usage.

I love the clarity and concise style of this book, and I applaud its believable and natural conversations. It was also professionally edited, and I didn't find any errors or typos. After 286 pages of delightful reading, I am glad to rate Desert Sanctuary 4 out of 4 stars! I would not recommend it to kids due to the violence and profanities in the book. For adults, especially lovers of crime fiction, this one is a winner!
