The book East Wind by Jack Winnick was an action-packed thriller that did not disappoint. In his usual fashion the book leaps straight into heart thumping action and does not stop. On what seems a typical day a businessman is getting ready for his day in his swanky condo, when he met his untimely and appalling demise. Uri Levin and Laura Edmonds are called in to work together to uncover the terrorist’s nuclear threat. In a twist of fate, the East wind desert, a place known for dust, plague and famine inhibit the terrorist total triumph, but it may not be enough for Uri and Lara to succeed in their mission to end the terrorist plans.

What I liked about the book was the detail. From the gruesome descriptions of the killings to the history of the characters. I felt completely immersed and engaged with the action of the story. Gaining insight into the minds of the characters was enthralling. I appreciated learning more about Lara’s background. I liked how she is portrayed as a smart woman, standing tall at the top of her class in college, and I love that she was so incredible that she amazed her instructors at Quantico. I like that it her hard work and effort and her choice to use her spare time to learn more about computers and codes sets her apart from the rest. I found it fascinating to hear the ways the internet can be used to conceal terrorist activity. It certainly gave me a greater appreciation for the need to guard my social media profiles.

I liked the psychological aspects the story brought by giving readers a peek into the mind of different characters. It was astonishing to see how the youth were mesmerized and indoctrinated into fighting for a cause. This was a stark reminder that people want to feel a part of something bigger and want to feel like they have a purpose. When one feels a sense of empowerment and sense of purpose, they develop a strength and courage to do things they never imagined, both for good and for evil.

I commend the author for incorporating so many modern-day themes into the pages of this book. He touches on greed, and even suggests that Americans are more concerned with profits than anything else. In a time where the world is battling the pros and cons of lives over profit in the wake of COVID, I found the statement significant and applicable. He also addressed the topics of terrorism, cyber security and the power of technology, the perversion of education and power, relationships and the competition and battles within government agencies. In each topic there is a theme suggesting nothing is inherently good or evil, but rather what one chooses to do with the entity.

There was nothing I did not like about this book, so I give it a 4 out of 4 stars . It was well written, fast past, engaging, realistic and detailed with just the right level of stealth and shock. I would recommend this book for adults ages 18 and up because of the detailed violence and adult themes.
