Review by m1n -- The Judge part 1 and 2 by Ian RB Morris
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Judge part 1 and 2" by Ian RB Morris.]
In The Judge: Part One by Ian RB Morris, we are introduced to the world of an ordinary London solicitor, Peter Ritchie. Peter sometimes works as a ‘duty solicitor’ for the police and is called for this in Chapter One, interrupting an evening in with his girlfriend, Naomi, another solicitor.
He expects to be working for his old client, Bobby Black. Bobby is a male prostitute and has been taken into custody in the past. We are told that Bobby is very good looking, well-spoken and charming. However, this time he can’t help Bobby sort out the usual bail conditions. Sadly, this time Peter is having to identify Bobby’s dead body.
Shocked at Bobby’s murder and horrified by the apparent lack of interest from the police, Ritchie decides he’s got to find the killer. It soon becomes clear Bobby wasn’t working on the street like other male hookers. He had some rich and important clients and it seems very likely that perhaps one of those, or someone linked to them, realised Bobby knew something important and dangerous and so wanted to shut Bobby up.
What follows is an exciting, and sometimes scary, mental, and physical chase as Peter tries to untangle who killed Bobby and why. It means not only is Peter in danger, so is Naomi. Morris racks up the stakes and induces more fear for the reader as we wonder who else might get killed and whether the truth will ever be uncovered.
The locations are well described, and the atmosphere of London feels real. The novel also shows both the seedy as well as the more salubrious sides to this exciting and sometimes dangerous city. This investigation isn’t about the usual crimes of a rough, London crime gang, but actually could be the work of the more privileged people in society.
I found the story fast paced, interesting and good at wrong-footing the reader’s expectations. I did notice some grammatical errors, but these could be corrected. Fortunately, they didn’t ruin the high-tension plot, which was full of surprises and unexpected developments. I liked the main character of Peter and applauded his investigative work for Bobby’s murder.
I think anyone who enjoys dark and intense murder mysteries will enjoy this book! However, I would also warn readers that this is an adult novel and I recognise that some people might find its discussion of prostitution and alternative lifestyles difficult.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

One of my favourite parts of the story was how well London was described! I actually lived in London briefly and the wine bar that they talk about was right next to my work, which made the story feel even more real to me! I also loved the past-paced nature of the book and felt the author had a brilliant skill for building tension. Thanks for sharing this great review!
