Review by Mounce574 -- Girl with the Flat Tire by Leon Loy
If you are looking for a fast-paced action-packed thriller to read, then Girl With A Flat Tire has you covered. Leon Loy writes a story filled with high-speed chases, a drug-addicted thief, murder, and a girl running away from a divorce. Add in a small town, an oil field worker, and a cartel leader bent on recouping his money or drugs on a mountain top, and you won't want to put this book down.
Anna is the main protagonist in this vividly written story. She has finally recovered from a divorce with a cheating husband. Deciding she needs a new start, she packs her bags and drives away from her parent's home in Mississippi, without any idea of where she wants to go. Meanwhile, a criminal hopped up on cocaine is running from police and a drug leader he stole $30,000 of drugs from. John speeds down the Texas highway, leaving a path of destruction in his wake.
Anna ends up getting a flat tire and is stranded on the highway with a broken jack. Just as it gets dark, an old truck pulls up and Travis assists her. Following her to a hotel in Flat Top Mountain, the duo becomes better acquainted, and he offers to find her a new tire the next day. After Anna eats breakfast in the town diner, she has no idea that John has targeted her with an ulterior motive.
I liked this book for it's easy, even-paced flowing story. Every character is described in enough detail to picture in the events leading all the way to the climax of the book. I felt Anna had lived a very sheltered life, as her naivety led her to make dangerous choices. I hated John for his cocky, bigoted demeanor. He didn't care about anyone but himself. Finally, I think Travis was afraid of failure or rejection. His seemingly shy and reserved nature came at a dangerous price.
I am rating this novel a 4 out of 4 stars. The subject matter of drug use, extreme violence, and racism I recommend for mature readers. There are references to sexual themes and rape, in which people that are sensitive to these themes, as well as young readers, may find offensive.
I found no grammatical errors in this well-written story. The suspenseful narration with colorful characters, even had me yelling "Don't go there!" The end, even though abrupt, had me laugh at the finale of every character. The Girl With A Flat Tire is a book that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
