East Wind by Jack Winnick is a fast-paced crime thriller. The subject is American Intelligence Agents versus Hezbollah, a Middle East terrorist organization. The scene is written post 9/11 in the United States. While the characters may be fictional, the organizations and terrorist groups are real. This story has a serious element of reality within its pages.

The book opens with a catastrophic explosion in Santa Monica Bay. The story then backtracks and introduces Uri, Israeli Special Agent, then Lara, FBI Agent. Uri had been sent on a mission in Lebanon. He returned with enemy documents that were shared with American Intelligence. Lara is the Special Agent in charge of electronic terrorism. She has figured out specific signatures to look for in electronic communication. Uri and Lara are brought together to form a team to find, track, then intercept a current terrorist plot in America. The story then brings us back to the explosion in the first chapter of the book. The first nuclear bomb has been detonated. The terrorist group states more bombs in other cities will follow if demands are not met. Uri and Lara race against time to find the terrorists and stop the next bombing.

Jack Winnick proves himself to be a master storyteller with this book. His plot is perfectly written and delivers on holding your attention. Winnick boggles the mind with his details of Middle East philosophy and nuclear engineering. The characters in his novel, both good and bad, seem real and are engaging. Uri and Lara are the perfect polar opposites team. Uri is an Israeli government-sanctioned hitman with ‘no rules’ to his game, and Lara is a paper-pushing computer geek who stays in an office. Winnick keeps the story moving at a fast pace with a couple of curveballs thrown in.

I loved this book. I connected with the characters early on and was captivated by the story until the end. I struggled slightly with understanding Winnick’s explanations of nuclear bomb manufacturing. However, I see that as my lack of knowledge pertaining to that field. I don’t blame the author for my ignorance. I also loved how he incorporated an off to the side romance between Uri and Lara. I felt that the attraction between the two added depth to the story. The romance doesn’t detract from the book. It comes in as a curveball to throw you off slightly before the ultimate showdown begins. I was totally entertained.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well written and without errors. The storyline flows flawlessly. It is the first book in a series. However, the story is by itself a complete novel. There is mild profane language dispersed throughout the book. There is also a sex scene that is for a mature reader. I would recommend this book for adults only.
