Review by DominicVenditti -- Devil Among Us by Jack Winnick
Despite how some actions can be rather galvanizing and offensive on many levels to many people they can still be the impetus and even inspiration for some rather interesting and impactful things. This can be said about Jack Winnick’s Devil Among US, a story about just that kind of scenario. Even though the concept of the novel is rather grotesque and alarming what came of such a grizzly idea is actually rather beautiful and even fascinating to behold.
The story follows two investigators for the United States and Israel who are assigned the case of a synagogue bombing in New York City. The story unfolds as a case of finding a group of assassins who are responsible not only for this, but also the killings of several important citizens who practice Judaism. Eventually, the two investigators also develop a kind of love interest with one another which comes into view as they unravel the mystery behind the bombing and assassinations.
Overall, the story is rather intriguing and keeps an excellent tempo with regards to conveyance and exposition. When being read, one cannot help but feel enraptured and enveloped by the plot and characters to the point where one would develop a genuine interest in what these people feel, do, and experience. The story is also for the most part thrilling but not graphic. Very little excessive gore is present in the story, and no vile or offensive language is utilized. Overall, if one is interested in immersive mysteries and realistic crime scenarios, they would probably enjoy this book.
However, when I say it is realistic in theme and concept, sadly, it is. This does depict very real social, religious, and political tensions which do result in violent acts in the real world. IT has a very sobering effect, and has the potential to really make one somber from a more than healthy dose of reality. Also, the book is proudly in favor of Israel, which I can tell you both from people I’ve known and from what is commonly known is a very controversial view to have. It is for those reasons that I would not recommend people who want to escape from very real issues or are offended by the State of Israel to read this book.
The novel however does rather well at what it tries to do, and for the most part does not falter in the minor things it could use some sprucing up on. I especially enjoyed how it took on a very realistic approach to the entire situation from every viewpoint in the story (the investigators, terrorists, etc.). Overall, I would give the book a four out of four, for these reasons and its exceptional editing.
