East Wind by Jack Winnick is the first novel of a series that stars the two main characters, Uri and Lara, who are both intelligence agents from different agencies that work together to stop criminals from committing further crimes. In this novel particularly, they are working to stop a terrorist group from executing another attack that could kill hundreds, if not thousands of US. Citizens, after the first attack, comes without warning.

There is a lot of backstories explored before we get to the first attack executed in the novel, learning more about the main players involved. The highlights of these stories are that you learn to understand why the criminals have chosen to walk this dark path of destruction, though some of them turn around while halfway down the road. I particularly enjoyed that Winnick does change the point of view of the novel, so you are able to explore the mindset of the different characters involved. You get to learn about their personalities, their motivations, histories, and their way of thinking to take certain actions that lead them forward in their involvement with the story. Also, not only are you exploring the minds of the good guys, but you also see the point of view of the criminals and can almost foreshadow what is going to happen.

Winnick has also done a lot of research in the novel about the long history of conflicts between several countries in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on the relationship with the United States. He uses different characters to tell you about the previous attacks and conflicts that are the basis for hostility between the two, and what actions are being taken as revenge for previous incidents.

There are also hints of romance between Uri and Lara, since Lara is single and Uri’s wife has suddenly left him about two months before the main plot of the novel, which is also when he meets Lara. There is tension and attraction between the two, but both are hesitant to start something new for different reasons, and you can’t help but root for the two to take action, even if it does seem to take a long time for anything to happen.

I would rate this book as 4 out of 4 stars. There was a small number of errors that needed to be pointed out, such as punctuation or spelling. There was no confusion or lost plot points, and the story was easy to follow. I would recommend this book to everyone, but in particular to lovers of action or terrorism crime novels. There is a small amount of foul language, so I would exercise caution with young readers.
