East Wind, by Jack Winnick, is a superb reading that takes you into the world of terrorist plots. In this book, Winnick expertly gives his readers a 360º view of the world of terrorism. This is done by allowing the reader to see events unfold through the eyes of each of the players. Winnick does an amazing job of establishing each character, providing brief backgrounds for each in a way that sets up how they ended up entangled in the current plot unfolding. I appreciate the way the writer builds the stories for each character. It doesn’t take long to begin to see the puzzle pieces fit together. Each character has their own story, their part to play. But, as the complete story unfolds, the reader can see each character fall into place.

One doesn’t have to be very deep into the book to become hooked on the pages, eager to see which way each character decides to go, and how their part fits into the story as a whole. The center of the story follows Lara, an FBI Special Agent, and Uri, a Special Agent with the Mossad. One of the aspects I found appealing in this book was the female heroine is not only a skilled FBI field agent; she is also a top-notch computer specialist. She designed a program that significantly enhances the FBI’s ability to weed out communications between terrorists. This, combined with information obtained by Uri on one of his missions, helps uncover one of the most violent plots against the US that could cost millions of lives.

Another aspect of Winnick’s approach to the narrative that I found appealing was how he provided the reader with the perspective of members of the terrorist group. One might just assume terrorists to be evil to the core, with no sympathy given to them or their fight. Winnick’s approach provides a view into how the terrorist gets pulled into that world through their life experiences and propaganda. Although the overall desire is for the plot to be foiled in time, the reader is left with a certain amount of understanding for some of the members of the terrorist group. Also included in this fantastic fiction is the possibility of players changing sides. Who can be bought or coerced? Is a change of heart possible? I found this aspect of the story added a sense of mystery and suspense beyond the fact that time is running out to thwart the attack itself!

My only negative response to this book is that although this is a fictional scenario, I believe it is plausible to the extent of how easily materials and man-power were obtained by the terrorist group to pull off their plan. Lessons learned in recent terrorist activities have shown that they do seem to find ways to get what they want. But this story just sort of brings it home with the detail of how it could be done. It demonstrates how the freedoms we enjoy could be played against us.

East Wind, by Jack Winnick, appears to have been professionally edited.

I give a rating of 4 out of 4 to East Wind, by Jack Winnick. I found the story engaging, exciting, suspenseful, and intriguing. This book could be interesting to anyone. I typically do not read this type of book and I was hooked in the first chapter. There is nothing to exclude this book from young readers, as I only noted one curse word, and there was only one intimate scene that was mild in its intensity.
