Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland
Rating: 2 out of 4 stars
Author: Barry Litherland
Uses profanity starting on the first page
Genre: C/T/M/H

"You forget so much of childhood. Sometimes, it feels like a waste of life. I mean, you live through all those years, nine or ten of them, and the only things you remember are catastrophically bad or exceptionally good."

Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland tells us two stories, one being the tempestuous past Phil and Wayne can't seem to leave behind, after they witnessed the death of their best friend Stevie, when they were kids. And the other one (now as adults), revolves around a burglary Wayne is suspected of committing. A file is stolen (JAYDEE), one of great interest to many important and dangerous people. Phil gets involved when he is violently asked to locate "JAYDEE" for them. The story unfolds as Phil tries to find out the true story behind the burglary and the content of the files. The return of Wayne's brother, Tyrone worries everyone but it also brings back painful memories and guilt.

The book experience starts with the intriguing title, "Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)" which stands out from others and makes you wonder what it is about. Perfect for a rainy, moody day so it's easier for the author to transport you into the setting where the book takes place. Appealing to an audience interested in the mystery and crime genre; Although if you are someone who dislikes the use of profanity, this book may not be for you, as some characters tend to curse. There are no erotic scenes just some mild connotations which are pretty brief.

It seems like the book was professionally edited and very well written, guiltless of repetitive words; It is narrated in the first person, by the main character Phil Tyler. It is enjoyable to read through his perspective and his thoughts. As a reader it's easy to find yourself being attached to his personality making the experience pleasant and even humorous at times.

Barry Litherland did a great job managing the stories that intertwine within the book, it was quite pleasant. Just when you were getting information from the past events he would finish the chapter and continue with the present story, which is engaging. The way the story unfolds gives room to play detective along with Phil Tyler and makes the reader feel involved with the story. By the end of the book is inevitable to feel attached to the main characters, it's easy to feel the tension that builds up as they resolve their problems. The presence of Tyrone is overwhelming as if you were right beside him. It feels real; If you were to ask me what I liked most about the book the answer would be contained within this last paragraph.

This book has a good character development however the explicit reason for "how past events cast shadows you can't outrun" (quoting the official book summary) was slightly undeveloped. As you go through the chapters and reach to the end it gets rather predictable at least for my taste, that's what I liked the least about the book, but that didn't fully prevent me from enjoying the plot twists encountered throughout the story. Also even though the story (that is not about Stevie's death) is entertaining I didn't find it wholly interesting, it didn't stick with me after I finished it. That became the reason I gave it a 2 out of 4 stars rating, but that's my judgment and I would encourage people to read it and have an opinion of their own as I can recognise it's a good book after all.

Despite the least likeable aspects, this is a very entertaining book and quite enjoyable, I do recommend reading it especially if you are fond of mystery/crime novels. I reiterate this review is based on my personal preferences, in the end, everyone experience things in their own way. I'm looking forward to reading more of Litherland's work.
