Review by Bothofus07 -- The Date Farm by Jack Winnick
The Date Farm by Jack Winnick is the fourth book in the Uri and Lara series. It is also the best book in the series and a fitting wrap up of the story. In the wake of a terrorist attack on a Beverly Hills shopping mall, semi-retired Mossad agent Uri Levin is called into action along with his wife and fellow agent, FBI analyst Lara Edmond. Their combined skills, along with their familiarity with the apparent mastermind of these terror plots, make the two of them invaluable to Homeland Security.
The attack on the mall was just a precursor of a larger plot, as terrorist operatives had also taken control of a strategically significant area of New York City. Meanwhile, on a date farm in Iran, vast far-reaching plans are unfolding that could change the dynamics of warfare with Israel and her American allies. Uri and Lara are ultimately tasked with infiltrating the date farm to determine the extent of terrorist activities. While their familiarity with the ringleader of this terror group and his tactics make Uri and Lara uniquely qualified for the mission, this also puts them in great danger of discovery. Our intrepid married couple must use all of their skills, as well as the latest in covert technology, to thwart this latest plot.
This story moved at lightning speed, covering territory across the world. The people and places were vividly written. Each character was well-drawn and easy to picture in the mind's eye. The description of each setting, from New York to Iran, was brilliantly executed. While reading, I could feel the dampness of the tunnels beneath New York City as well as the dusty heat of the date farm.
The story was incredibly detailed, from the latest in GPS technology to the irrigation methods of date farming. Fact and fiction blended seamlessly in telling a realistic-sounding story of international espionage and terror. I was left wondering just how much of the technology used in the story was actually in use by counter-terrorism units.
What I liked most about this book was the plot itself, the storytelling was very well done. I have enjoyed this book series immensely, and this was the best book in the series. There wasn't anything I disliked about this book. There was a brief mention of sex between the married main characters, but nothing graphic. No profanity stood out to me in this book. I give The Date Farm 4 out of 4 stars for a well-written spy thriller that would appeal to any fan of the genre.
