The Date Farm by Jack Winnick is a stimulating story filled with non-stop thrills, chills and suspense. It begins with the U.S. being rocked by an attack of the most heinous act of terrorism, leaving behind massive loss of innocent lives and crippling the communications systems of all the defense agencies. The U.S. is then left scrambling to find out who is behind it, only to discover it was led by a familiar foe. The U.S. has to act fast to track down all those involved, and also recover an invaluable asset stolen. The U.S. enlists the help of two special agents, Uri Levin and Lara Edmond, who are partners in work and marriage. The two will use their knowledge of the enemies’ language and culture to get into their world. But will their luck run out as they must insert themselves in the midst of danger to try and restore what the enemy has taken?

The author, Jack Winnick does an exceptional job at giving the reader a detailed visual understanding of each character throughout the story, providing physical descriptions and distinguishing attributes. I appreciated having a picture of not just the main characters but also each of the sub characters throughout the story. Additionally, I liked how the story was told as two separate evolving stories, providing the actions of the characters on the U.S. and the enemies’ side in detail. The developments of the two stories keeps the reader either wondering what will happen next or waiting for the anticipated action to happen.

As the story progressed what I disliked the most was how the story slowed down, or felt a little drawn out at a point where I thought more action would have taken place or at least the story would have switched over to other story line. During this period of a stalled story line, I found myself wanting to skip ahead (but I didn’t) or just wondering why more hadn’t happened. By the time the story switched to the other story line the timing was behind. So as much time that had passed on the one side, the same time elapse had not occurred yet in the other story line. Once the story timing was in synch I was glad that the action picked up again. As someone who is a fan of action and suspense I was disappointed with the ending. Instead of ending with WOW! That was great! I felt more like oh!, ok, That was nice.

The main characters Lara and Uri were very easy to like throughout the story. I liked that the author did not beat you over the head with the fact that the couple were married and that their professionalism and bravery took center stage. The supporting cast of characters added a nice array of personalities from the straight formal types to the regular common people. The author presented the various characters in a way that keeps the reader guessing who the true friendlies were and who were with the enemy.

Overall I would give The Date Farm by Jack Winnick a three out of four stars. The pros were, the story was well written and since I did not come across any grammatical errors or typos it had to have been professionally proof read. I loved that the action started at the beginning and took the reader on a fast ride. I would recommend The Date Farm to readers who enjoy action and suspense. The reason why I did not give it a four out of four is I did not like the slow-down in the action of the story towards the middle. I also questioned some of the directions the story went in towards the end. In my opinion, the ending left a feeling of unfinished business and not the sense of resolve and closure. I felt with all the main characters went through from both sides there should have been more of a vindication ending for them instead of the feeling the author was trying to leave the door open for a sequel.
