Jack Winnick's East Wind, 2nd edition is a fast-paced suspense thriller about a terrorist plot in the US. Throughout the story, the reader is taken on a roller-coaster of "what next" scenarios and finally, the story culminates in a neat action sequence.

The story has two important characters, Uri Levin, a ruthless field agent, and Sara Edmond, a computer wiz. Uri is from the Israel spy agency, Mossad, while Lara works for the USA's FBI. Both are brought together in the States to pursue a possible terrorist attack, brought into attention by Lara's computer program. Uri, having found some clues similar to this in his previous spy operation, takes up a prominent role in the present investigation. On the other hand, we have a glimpse into the terrorists' backgrounds, their leader Nasrallah's influence on them and the beginnings of the long plan to build a nuclear bomb in the country itself and blackmail the US into dis-association with Israel. When the time comes, the first bomb doesn't blast as per plan leaving some clues for the agents. Nasrallah then gives an ultimatum of 5 days until the second blast of which he warns the consequences will be severe. How the entire country's future rests on the two agents? Will the time be on Uri and Lara's side to stop the further mayhem? Will they be able to successfully foil the plan without any circumstantial losses to their side? These questions make up the story.

The book started with a bang. It's so perfect, building that anticipation in the right amount, setting a perfect stage for the thriller. I was hooked right there within a few pages. That's the kind of brilliance Jack shows, immersing the reader into the story. Another capture point of the story is that you get a full-blown history lesson so that the characters are provided a perfect backdrop for their actions. Also, being an engineer, I loved to read about some physics concepts too. All this coupled with the perfect editing gave a nice feeling towards reading the book.

Now coming to the not so nice part, there aren't many except that the main characters of Uri and Lara could've been given more responsibility. Towards the end of the story, the reader might get a feeling of whether they are doing anything at all. There are places where they just slip away into the background making the reader forgetful of their existence. But it does not stop the story's flow and is not a hiccup at all.

Finally, I loved how some sentences were so poignant. Like the one where Uri quotes, "Our former Prime Minister Golda Meir said it best. 'We will have peace with Arabs when they love their children more than they hate ours.'" They resonate with the readers and make them think of where exactly we are failing as humanity. For all this and more, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 and recommend to anyone who wants a nice suspense thriller with a terrorist plot.
