Devil in False Colors by Jack Winnick
Mr. Winnick has delivered another thrilling, page-turning, nail-biting story with characters readers have come to know and respect. Lara Edmonds, with the Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York along with Uri Levin, one of the most famous assassins in Mossad, once again combine forces to stop terrorist attacks in the United States. Preschoolers have been found slaughtered with a sign left at the scene that reads "The Islamic State warns: stay out of our land or more will die!" It is uncertain at first whether this is an attack by the Shia or Sunni Muslims. This gruesome scene both angers and scares those in government and law enforcement.
The Iranian Prime Minister, Feroze Abbasi, along with Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah from Lebanon, have crafted a plan to destroy the Sunni Muslims in the United States. Using deception, they plan attacks that have a threefold purpose; apportion blame for Shia terrorist attacks to the Sunni population, cause fear in the United States' population and implicate Jews erroneously as being aggressors against the Sunnis.
Quickly after the attack on the preschool, two more events bring terror to the Jewish community; an attack on two temples during the Festival of Purim and a well-planned scene during the Israel Independence Day. Many of the perpetrators are an unseasoned bunch and the attacks are not as thorough as they could have been. Although not being the complete success envisioned by Abbasi and Nasrallah, their narcissism knows no bounds.
Lara and Uri have each concocted elaborate plans to infiltrate the terrorist groups in the United States. Lara plans to answer an ad seeking radical Islamic brides to be actively involved in the terrorist plots against their own countries. Uri proposes to take the place of a convicted prisoner, Farid Refai, to insinuate himself into Muslim communities. As neither of them is sure which of the two Muslim groups is responsible for the recent attacks, they are at a standstill on how to proceed. As they learn the identities of the terrorist factions and their leaders, their plans are adapted.
Relying on their skills as agents and linguists, Laura and Uri are tested frequently. Just when one feels that there is no escape, their talents along with some unexpected luck come into play. Thrown into the mix is a "zero-day worm" that will keep the reader guessing until the last pages.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
