Review by xxqueenforadayxx -- B-Side by Janis Jones
I'll start with my rating on this one. I rated B-Side by Janis Jones 1 out of 4 stars because of how much it disappointed me. Not that the story itself was bad. Also, it did appear to be professionally edited. I was just expecting a lot more from it then I ended up getting. Mostly because the description led me to believe it was going to be a lot more "dark and twisty" then it actually was. The story, while good, just wasn't something I'm into. "Not my cup of tea." I just gave one star because it was well-edited and for having an alright story line.
The story begins with detective Mara and her girlfriend, Casey, preparing for their third anniversary night. While Mara is running her last errands and on her way home, a flower delivery man shows up at her door for Casey. He ends up attacking her and Mara is determined to discover why. After her coworkers give up, she takes the case into her own hands with the help of her partner, and ex-boyfriend, Derek.
What I liked the most about this book is that even though it's written like a script, I found it much easier to visualize. The whole book played like a movie in my head. The way the perspective rotated through Mara, Casey, and Derek made it easy to imagine the different "scenes". Also, I liked the flashbacks she used, it helped me understand the characters more. I love to have a detailed background for each character because it makes them that much more real for me.
What I disliked the most about this book was the cover description of the book. I thought it was a bit heavier than the story actually was. I thought the chapters were too short, some being only one page. I think it's harder to read a book with a hundred five-paged chapters compared to a book with five hundred-paged chapters. Lastly, I wasn't happy to discover it's actually a script. It might be printed as a book, but it's still a script.
I would recommend this book to a mature audience. It does contain one bad scene of violence, vulgar language, and a few some-what explicit scenes. As in heavy petting, kissing, and a little foreplay. This novel is about a lesbian couple, so if you for whatever reason don't like that then this isn't the book for you. I think people that enjoy watching the cop dramas on TV would highly enjoy this novel though.
