This is a book review of THE DARK WEB MURDERS // The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries - Book 4 written by Brian O'Hare.
Brian O'Hare, once again, takes the reader on a fictional criminal investigative journey into the heart of modern day Northern Ireland.
The author writes with effective detail and relevance throughout the narration. So much so, that he manages to pull the reader's mind right into the storyline; making them feel "a part of" and not just a spectator.
He accomplishes this by making the audience feel like they are able to relate to each of the individual character's personalities, thoughts and actions; not just reading about them.
Besides writing in great detail and using an easy to follow timeline and plot, the author keeps you entertained and mesmerized by the twist and turns of a mysterious and horrendous crime spree.
A string of murders are committed by an intelligent, elusive, psychopathic killer. The story unfolds as the crimes are investigated by a team of street savvy, "out of the box" thinking investigators who prove to be a capable match for the murderous, unknown culprit.
Chief Inspector Sheehan and his detective partner, Denise Stewart, lead his investigative team through this unusual case. With their trademark doggedness, intelligence, camaraderie and wry humor, Sheehan and his police detectives must follow the dark path of a vicious killer.
At first glance, the brutal killing of a well known, powerful judge, seems to be tied to an unknown blackmailer; based on information from the judge's personal assistant. But, the more the team mulls this over, there seems to be more to this story than meets the eye.
They decide to run a parallel investigation, looking at recently released convicts who had threatened the judge after harsh sentences were put into play by him.
In the midst of an already puzzling set of clues, the "very helpful" assistant to the judge, Edgar Doran, informs Sheehan that there was a gathering of people at the judge's house on the eve of his murder.
When they study the list of attendees, the team is puzzled by their varied backgrounds. Looking at each character, they strain to understand what would bring such a group together.
"Money aside, sir, I struggle to even imagine what you might have in common!" (Inspector Sheehan)
As the team separates the attendees for interviews, it's apparent they have a rehearsed response for the reason of the gathering; a shared dislike of Brexit. Knowing that this is a smokescreen, they determine to dig deeper into the judge's business and life.
With some extra sleuthing, a secret safe is found. Sheehan and the other investigators are sure the contents hold the key to the murder mystery.
Once they open the safe, the team is startled by new revelations into the judge's recent activities. Now, the suspect pool, when added to the two groups already being investigated, has grown exponentially.
In the meantime, Sergeant Stewart, compelled by a conversation she had with a fellow detective, uses her skills as a proficient techie and plunges into an unfamiliar place - The Dark Web.
With a brief word search, using bits and pieces of information from the current investigation, she stumbles upon blog entries written by a seemingly cultivated, highly intelligent writer.
Horrified, she reads as the writer describes, in great detail, his justification for planning and implementing the known murders, with more to follow. With each blog entry, the sordid details of every murder are described as the killer seeks approval and vindication for his actions.
This killer's crime spree holds a modern twist; one that this group of detectives has never faced. Suddenly, Sheehan and his crew of standard investigators are challenged with the problem of trying to track a killer through a place where anonymity is key.
Most of the team had never heard of this dark place much less known how to pursue a suspect hiding in its depth.
As Stewart continues to track the blog entries, she reads what is presented as the description of the final target of the blogger. This individual is not going to be a murder victim. But, the killer intends to make sure this person, who will face his "justice" will suffer greatly "while he yet lives".
Will the team be able to stop this murderous madman before he takes his furious revenge out on his stated "last victim"? And, will they be able to uncover the maddening motive that prompted the carnage in the first place?
Whether a reader is looking for an intellectually stimulating plot that feeds a crime story lover's imagination. Or, the reader is just an "average joe" who wants a crime "fix" with plenty of twists and turns, this novel has the right stuff!
*I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I feel it is well written, concise and easy to follow. It keeps the reader engaged with plot twists that don't leave gaping holes in the storyline.
The characters are believable and the plot is realistic.
*It appears that this book was professionally edited. I found no typos or spelling errors. However, I did find a few grammatical errors that really didn't take away from the writing.
*There was only one word of profanity in the entire writing. (Page 291- paragraph 3): "Get out to F**k!"
Any other lines of anger or frustration were merely slang words.
*There are several "erotic scenes" that I would give a score of 3.
*I would not recommend this book for young/pre-teen readers. Also, anyone who would be offended by sexual content would not enjoy this novel.
The entire basis of the book is a killer who uses a certain type of sexual abuse on each corpse to make his own point.
Also, in order to lure some of his victims, the killer sets up perceived sexual encounters, which include bondage scenarios.
Other subjects touched upon in the book, are organized child pornography, sexual slavery, and BDSM, as well as detailed descriptions of some victims as they are rescued.
***Well written and a good read!!!***
