Twisted but True by Daren Burch is about the author's career in law enforcement. He tells stories about the most unbelievable occurrences during his time in the police department. Burch includes stories from each part of his career in different departments in the police (such as his time as a Night Homicide Detective and his work in the Adult Sex Crimes Unit) and as different rankings. He gives plenty of details without it being boring, including background on police procedures so readers can understand his thought processes while on the job. Each chapter is better than the last and makes you want to keep reading. I never wanted the book to end.
I believe teens and adults can enjoy this book. The stories can be a little graphic and there are some curse words (the first one being on page forty eight in the chapter title). This book is definitely not as graphic as it could have been though. Readers can tell he kept the gore to the bare minimum and used curse words only if they applied to the story he was telling.
I rate this book four out of four stars. He makes the readers both laugh at the strange criminals and cry at his personal tragedies. Adding the pictures in the middle of the book gave it a nice personal touch. The readers also get a newspapers take on the same event the author described. Also, we see the author in his uniform among mentioned family and coworkers, helping us to visualize him in action during the stories. He easily allows readers to empathize with him and put themselves in his shoes. He includes details about his personal life to show his family side, too. The only complaint I have with this book is that I would have liked to have learned more background about his partners and the other people in his departments.
There are several parts of the book that were extremely important to me. He acknowledges the fact that he is a white cop sometimes arresting black criminals and how that can look. Considering this is an occurring problem in society at this time, I feel this is a strong point he needed to make. Perception is major as a police officer and they must always be aware of how the public sees them. Also, he repeatedly tells of his mistakes, showing he is not a perfect cop. He is human just like the rest of us. I also really loved how he describes his first brush with helping people. This small story keyed the readers in on what triggered Burch to go into the military and then become a police officer.
All in all, I would highly recommend this book to everyone I know. His stories are tantalizing and thrilling. He keeps the writing relatable honest, or as honest as he can without compromising anything about the people in his stories. I completely loved reading this book as I hope you all will to. I look forward to reading Burch's future books.
