The book that I reviewed was titled Arsenic and Old Men by Glenn Ickler. I almost missed the beginning of this book because there are no chapters and the first chapter does not start out on its own page. The beginning of this book I personally found to be quite slow. By chapter 12, the author mixed some comedy with suspense in this small-town murder.

A millionaires’ heir and his reporter friends are left to help the police solve this mystery. Who killed Walter Jerome? Who is Teddy Brewster? So many questions that are left unanswered so of course the team is set out to find the answers. What started out as a short trip to Martha’s Vineyard wound up being a longer stay then expected. With getting stuck in a nor’easter and kidnapped, these men have no idea what they are in store for. Who would have thought that inheriting so much money would be so dangerous?

I found several errors in this story. Location 214 and 225 referenced someone using air quotes while speaking and worded it ridiculously within the book. This was also the same for location 648. I found several formatting issues with paragraph formation and no real separation between the chapters.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is suspenseful yet funny. I enjoyed the fact that the mystery wasn’t given away early on in the book and it kept the reader guessing who the killer was. This book can be read by anyone from preteens to adults. Although there is no profanity in this book, there is reference of nudity in several parts of the book. The story could have been improved if there had been another suspenseful scene or plot twist after we find out who the murderer is.
