The trial of Conner Padgett, A lawyer's gamble, By Carl Roberts.
Is an exciting, warm and emotional story centered around Jack Carney, a very successful middle aged corporate civil litigation Attorney. The story takes place in Louisiana, and focuses on Jack's struggle to defend his financially less fortunate childhood friend Conner Padgett who, with news cameras rolling publicly shoots the man who kidnapped his 11 year old son Scot and later dies in the hospital from complications unrelated to the shooting. The story has several side themes woven through it, making it a delightfully interesting tale of human struggle, law, relationships, love, and sacrafice.
The plot focuses mainly on Jack, and all of the pieces of the elaborate puzzle he has to juggle and eventually perfectly fit together in order to successfully defend Conner during the murder trial. It walks you through the heartache of Jack's failing marriage and lingering love and admiration for his wife Adrienne, his past as an Air force RB-57 spy plane pilot, and touches upon the relationships he has formed with his fellow Attorneys and sailing enthusiast friends.
The author paints a colorful and detailed picture of Jack's past and present situations in life. What I liked most about the story was that the author's character descriptions were so outstandingly detailed and warm, I felt as if I could actually see each one of them and formed a personal connection with main character, Jack. I would have given this story a perfect rating if I wasn't left hanging at the end, with unanswered questions like, did he ever get together again with the female reporter he described as having a cute personality like Renee Zellweger's, did Connor's wife Mary Beth actually join him in Florida at the end, and did he keep in touch with Connor.
The story was set up for a sequel but, I feel unsatisfied with the abrupt ending. I will read the second book in the series should the author decide to write another but, hopefully the ending and conclusion of the story would be more rounded out than this one was.
If you have a warm spot for southern hospitality and culture, are interested in the law and what goes on in the courtroom and the lives of the Attorneys who fill it everyday, or even just like a story about life and the close bonds we form with people, this story is for you. Once I got to the last 300 pages, I was so interested in the ending that I just couldn't put the book down. I rate this story a 3 out of 4 stars.
