In the book Twisted But True, Darren Birch brilliantly engages his readers with true crime stories that are humorous, unimaginable and potentially life threatening. He launched into this book by forewarning that it may not be suitable for all audiences due to its graphic and explicit language involving homicides and sex crime investigations.

His first tale began in his teenage years with his three best friends attending a desert party in 1979. This trip ended with a tragic car accident that was caused by another driver who made a moronic decision that ended the life of two of his passengers. It left the anticipated scars of second guessing oneself to playing a pivotal role in the career path this author later chose in law enforcement. I found this particular tale to be both humorous and emotional and included the elements I enjoy most when reading a good book.

I perceive that Darren Birch’s success of transforming over 30 years of true crime stories experienced first hand has been a labor of adulation and makes this book a compelling read. Twisted But True has some very graphic tales such as That Sucks, Mr. Hoover (Chapter 24) and No More Mr. Nice Guy (Chapter 27) that are more grossly sexual in nature. However, I respect him for choosing the high road in many situations that were depicted in other tales as he without hesitation selflessly put his on safety on the line to help fellow officers. I recommend this book for true crime readers as well as those who wish to have a career in law enforcement. I found this book entertaining for its humor and sincere heartfelt compassion from a seasoned law enforcement officer/detective and family man.

Twisted But True is exceptionally well edited from beginning to end. It rapidly turned into a late-night page turner for me as it left me wanting to find out what twists were on the next page. Although some of the stories would not be my first choice to read, I think he did an awesome job sharing his true passion for serving others while highlighting his competence for investigative work. This book can easily be considered as a reliable source and a point of reference to anyone who might be studying or working in law enforcement. For those reasons, “I am happy to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.”
