Twisted Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the fascinating story of an assassin, Akira Sato. The book describes the last mission she is given in order to earn her freedom from the Zakura-kai, notorious yakuza family in Japan. Akira is described by the author as a beautiful Asian woman with long black hair and dark eyes, she is in her early twenties. The job is on board a cruise ship with a companion who plays the role of her father, Takashi Hamada. Takashi is a Zakura-kai cleaner sent to watch over the mission to ensure its success as it is a high priority case for Mitsui, the leader of the Zakura-kai.
Akira’s mission is to locate the target and eliminate. The events that followed are not what she expected going in. She is forced to face circumstances and make decisions she was not prepared for but this is what adds to the story and makes it one worth reading.
The story is filled with mystery and hints at different things that are hidden from the reader. There are hidden killers, hidden characters and hidden aspects of the story that keeps you reading until the end, which is one of the things that I like most about the book. The story was well structured and the flow was smooth. It was written in such a way that you had no real idea of who the killer was until the author was ready for you to know. This level of suspense is a basic but hard to achieve requirement for a good mystery and the author was able to keep us guessing about the most vital piece of the story until the end and once revealed you could not help but be truly surprised. The book had no aspects of it that I did not like.
The main themes explored in the story include family, love, murder, survival, loyalty, death, character growth, mystery, manipulation, darkness and light and many others. These themes each played a vital part in the development of the plot and the characters.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I gave Twisted Threads this rating because not only was the book well written, it was also professionally edited. One would be hard-pressed to find an error in it, I did not.
I recommend this book to both genders and both sixteen and above. However, I do recommend also that those who decide to read this book have a reasonable tolerance for scenes that include blood and descriptions of murders that take place during the course of the book. For those that love a good mystery and a book that will keep you guessing until the end then this is the perfect book for you.
