An Imperfect Crime by Fred G baker

When Father Montero visits a man on death row convicted of murder, he has serious doubts about his guilt, as does Detective Sanchez of Phoenix PD the original investigating officer, who thought the crime scene was too perfect, like a set up.

Together the unlikely duo (or are they?) with the help of a few friends along the way, embark on a search for a key witness who failed to appear in court. A search which takes them through a maze of, sex trafficking, gun running, drug lords and missing persons cases. The action doesn't just take place in Phoenix but also in other cities in the Western US and Mexico. Although they are thwarted at times by bureaucracy along the way, they always find imaginative (and not totally legal) ways to work around it.

The plot twists and turns at a pace that makes you want to just keep on turning the pages, which then takes you to a rather surprising place for its final reveal.

I really enjoyed the fast, action packed pace of this book, and its original, humorous and twisting plot, which has you guessing all the way. I also thoroughly enjoyed the two main characters who I found to be likeable and believable, and their developing relationship interesting. I especially liked the character of Father Montero whose background is rather mysterious and I would like to learn more of his past. I really hope that there will be more books featuring Father Montero and Detective Sanchez.

I disliked that at times the plot was a little too complex, with some parts seemingly irrelevant to the main plot which I found distracting. Also I was a little disappointed with the ending in not finding out some of the whys, although maybe this is to pave the way for a sequel ? For these reasons I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars instead of 4 stars.

This book would appeal to a broad audience, so if you are a fan of crime, mystery, or thrillers (as it packs them all in), who enjoy a complex story told at a fast pace, with humour and good solid characters then I would recommend it. Although the storyline by its nature contains some violence it is not graphic, nor is it sexually explicit. I found it to be very well edited, and only noticed one grammatical error.
