What happens when you become targeted by the police and betrayed by your associates? Stay and face a trial that you will never win? Gringo by Dan "Tito" Davis and Peter Conti is a firsthand account of the trials and tribulations faced by the author when he chose to run away from the United States amidst accusations of drug running and a plethora of other charges.

The book briefly delves into Dan’s dealings in the United States before one of his associates sold him out to the police and forced him to flee to South America. There, he skipped from town to town and tried to rebuild his life by receiving help from several prominent gangs, including the Medellín Cartel. In the end though, the law did catch up to him and through some unfortunate events, he was returned to the United States to stand trial for his actions.

This book instantly caught my attention as a good review opportunity as I enjoy a good adventure story. Indeed, the premise and story of the book were the strongest points about it. From reading the author’s Wikipedia page, I knew that the book will inevitably end with his capture and extradition to the United States. However, this did not diminish my enjoyment of the story at all. The author’s careful management of the reader’s suspense kept me excited throughout the story despite having spoiled the outcome of the story for myself by first researching on the author.

Ultimately, as this is a novel regarding the adventures of a criminal on the run, adult themes including strong violence, sex and narcotics invariably pop up time and again. Whilst this is not a romantic novel by any means, the vivid descriptions of some sexual scenes could be a turn off for those who are more reserved about the subject. Personally, I feel that most, if not all of the sexually descriptive sections of the book could have been removed without hampering the enjoyment of the reader. Hence, it is somewhat of a pity for the author to have left those parts of the book in. Nonetheless, even if you are more sensitive to such subjects, you should not let this discourage you from taking a look at this book, as these subjects do not take up a significant portion of the book.

In the end, there were some typographical errors (typos) and sexually explicit sections which I did not enjoy and therefore prevented me from rating this book a perfect 4 stars. Despite so, the suspense and excitement I got throughout the story allows me to comfortably rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Those who enjoy a good adventure should certainly consider picking up this book as it will prove to be a fun read. However, should you be more sensitive to topics such as sex and narcotics, this book unfortunately delves into these topics rather frequently and thus may be a less suitable read for these readers.
