You’ll agree with me that life is a game. Depending on the choice each individual tap on, they either win or lose the game. Of course, the winners will jolly and be satisfied with their accomplishments. What of those who’ve lost? Will they give up, or will they try redeeming what they’ve lost? It could be their identity or reputation. The author took the liberty to highlight this concept in his story. The story is filled with incredible and thrilling plot twists, engaging scenes as well as a reasonable sense of unintended humor.
Matthias Callaghan, the protagonist, is a young and handsome fellow from a wealthy family. He lost his mum in death at a young age. His relationship with his dad is a bit complicated. At the University, Matthias meets Allan, a computer expert, and their friendship infuses their partnership in business. Unfortunately, Allan does a stupid and a terrible mistake that rests Matthias on a hospital bed at Saint Puys, his face covered with bandages and his fingers mutilated.
Waking up from a coma, Matthias wonders about who he is, why is he at the hospital and what happened to him. He tries solving the puzzle so that he may remember anything that will help him trace the cause of his calamity. Did he succeed?
The lost Identity Casualty by Kim Ekemar is book one of the Callaghan septology. It consists of two parts. Part one highlights the fragments of a puzzle from a forgotten past. And part two explains in details the reward from exacting revenge. The scenes in the plot are chronologically narrated. Furthermore, the cover of the book gives a brief summary of what to expect in the book.
The book will enlighten the reader about what drives people in their professional capacity. Quite a number of characters have secrets about their past that they don’t want to share with other characters for fear they may lose some privileges. Based on my judgement, I feel like part two of the book is where all the juice was contained. I’m saying this because this is where the protagonist is immensely into action. And it’s in this part that I reckoned his IQ level. Being a crime and horror book, there are scenes that portray horrifying acts. Therefore, sensitive readers to such traits will not enjoy reading this book.
I adore how the author uses different font styles to identify the period of the event and when a character is silently thinking. Beginning with a brief history and summary of the book is an outstanding step that the author adopted. And this will prepare the hearts and the minds of the readers before they delve into the story. Each part of the book has a captivating title that captures the reader’s attention and creates in them the eagerness to know what’s contained in the part. I was enlightened on various organ transplants that I didn’t know they existed. Moreover, the book vividly highlights the guidelines to follow for surgery to be successful. Additionally, the protagonist’s proficiency to acquire information is incredible.
Albeit the engaging and captivating story, I identified traits that didn’t appeal to me. They include repetition of some plot segments on page 189 and 190 and inconsistent use of a specific name for some characters. I recommend a consistent use of one name to identify the characters to avoid confusing the readers in the future. Finally, the switching from first to the third-person narrative is a bit confusing and if one is not keen they might lose track of their reading.
The themes highlighted in the book include prostitution, drug smuggling, the slave trade, entrepreneurship, healthcare, surgical procedures, family, legal development, kidnapping, greed, and revenge. Unfortunately, I didn’t ascertain any moral lesson to share in the review.
With all that said, I rate the book at 3 out of 4 stars. The author did an excellent job in world-building. He gifted the readers with a thrilling, intriguing, and superb story that’s worth reading. Though professionally revised, I encountered some grammatical errors. I didn’t give the book a 4 star because of the repetition of certain plot sections, and the numerous grammatical errors. Readers who love Crime and horror stories will enjoy reading this book.
