Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a book with many complex layers. The story is based around a health watch called VT2, invented by a brilliant young doctor named Vijay Patel who works for the company, Vital Tech. The watch was supposed to monitor medical signs, analyze, and render you a final notice, informing you and your doctor, that you had 10,20 or 30 days before your death. It was meant to help people ease the final days and get their affairs in order. The controversy surrounding the watch started when reports of a shooting and a suicide, having possible links to the VT2 watch. And the FBI becomes involved, investigating the incidents, and discoveries are made that the NRA gives discounts to senior citizens to purchase guns.
Follow along as a senior couple, Vince, Trudi, and their dog Miles take you down the path of questioning everything you thought about guns, gun laws, politics, immigrants, senior citizens, school violence and the NRA.
I liked how the story started with an ordinary couple gently leading you into a maze of issues, often forgetting that this was a fictional story. I was drawn in slowly, as the story unfolds, while Vince is feeling unsettled about getting older and after an incident where he is knocked down by someone much younger, he is faced with his own vulnerable. And as Trudi and Vince often watch the news together, they are bombarded with stories of gun violence leaving Vince to silently begin to question whether he should consider owning a gun in order to feel safer.
You will enter the world where, technology, politics, big companies, ordinary people, the FBI, death, shootings, gun access, getting older, and the NRA are all put into question. Leaving you to wonder and consider, if I was given a final notice what would I do? What could I do as an individual and what can we do as a society about guns?
I would recommend this book to anyone who might have ever had the same silent thought as Vince did about whether owning a gun is a good idea or not. And I would caution that some of the detail about the shooting (included a school shooting) and suicide may be disturbing to some. If you find yourself caught up in the characters, rest assured the end will not disappoint. There is a final Epilogue detailing how each character is doing. As well as a new song that Trudi began working on (as her character wrote and sang folk songs) called, Crazy Eddie Got A Gun (that what the NRA has done). I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars because I found no apparent errors and it was well written. It is a book that not only found a way to entertain but offered much to think about. Also in the back of the book, you will find a Final Noice - questions for book clubs included for further discussion.
