I would give Daisy’s Run by Scott Baron a rating of 3 out of 4. This book is a technical, post-apocalyptic story. The story follows Daisy who wakes up on a spaceship as she begins to understand the current situation that she herself is in as well as the current condition of earth and the universe. The story develops slowly, revealing unexpected (although sometimes predictable) situations with the other members of the ship’s staff. The ship has many problems with its mechanics with which Daisy and a co-worker, being the tech experts, have to deal. Daisy learns of disturbing things on the ship and after a terrible accident, becomes suspicious of some of the crew. This leads to some actions that may appear to be irrational. The book ends with resolution to her suspicions while still leaving things very open for future adventures.

The part I disliked most is the many extensive technical sections of the book. The tech part mostly involves the repairs and mechanics of the ship. Some parts seem to go on quite a bit in technical terms that I didn’t find necessary to gain the level of needed comprehension to follow the story line. It seemed to be fluff to fill the pages. I also did not care for the first chapter or so of the book before the “humans” were released from stasis. The sentences in this first section ran on and on, making it difficult and unpleasant to read. In most cases when I get a book, I read the first couple of pages to decide if I am actually interested. That said, I am happy that I pushed through the beginning.

The redeeming part of this book is the actual story, which I do feel is the most important part of a book. I have read many post-apocalyptic stories and I do feel like this has an interesting new take on the future. Kudos to Scott Baron for a new “insight” on the future. I think it is worth the read of Daisy’s Run and the technical and run-on sentences can be forgiven for this benefit.

I think that Daisy’s Run would appeal to techies and people interested in robotics just to compare their knowledge to the information in the book. Obviously, those individuals that enjoy the futuristic sci-fi novel would like this book. The writing would seem to appeal to Young Adults, however it did have 2-3 sex scenes that would make it inappropriate for young adults. I’m not sure those excerpts are needed, but I think I understand why he felt it added to the story to include them. I cannot further explain that without giving away key points of the story line.

The writing overall is good and seems to have been well edited. I found only one error in spelling which was late in the book.
