Official Review: Chrome Mountain by Ben Schneider

Sonya and Trey are an unlikely duo who cross paths in this sci-fi adventure. After Trey, a nerdy scientist finally finishes his latest and greatest invention, he destroys it knowing it’s potential to be threatening to humankind. Unbeknownst to him, a terrorist group is already aware of this invention when they are contacted by Treys angry ex girlfriend. The group plots to capture Trey and use them on their science team. Trey is then introduced to Sonya, a tough biker on the run from her former gang leader and abusive ex boyfriend Levi. Whether is was divine intervention, or completely random, the pair stick together on their adventure of being pursued.

Chrome Mountain by Ben Schneider is a suspenseful and thrilling read. Action is not typically my go-to genre yet I found myself unable to put this book down. This book was full of adventure from the very beginning and kept me hooked wondering what was going to happen next. The layout of each chapter kept the book at a perfect pace. High adrenaline scenes followed lighter and more humorous scenes assuring that the reader would not be tired out solely from pure action and adventure. The mixture of dark and light elements were very interesting to me.

From Sonya’s abusive past, to her friend getting senselessly murdered, to Treys hardship of losing both his job and his girlfriend, it is a dark and tragic storyline. What I enjoyed about it was the authors use of sarcasm and humor throughout which gave it a touch of lightheartedness. The main characters often had snarky remarks in response to the horrible events happening around them. The group of terrorists are portrayed as intimidating yet there are scenes of them goofing off and having dimwitted moments.

Characters were excellently developed throughout the story giving the reader a strong connection to them. Sonya started off with a rough biker life of violence, stealing, and enduring abuse. As the story goes on, she is able to find the path of Christianity which she believes is what leads her to Trey. Christianity and redemption is a central theme to this story which draws everything together. The changes that Sonya and Trey go through make the book more relatable and heartening rather than just an action story.

This is not a suitable book for children with the amount of violence and the use of some strong language. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The only questionable parts I found were occasional descriptions of the characters. An FBI agent is repeatedly referred to as “the black woman”. While saying this once is fine for a physical description, the repetition of this description could be potentially seen as a little bit racially insensitive. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a very fun read. This was also very well written and I was unable to find any grammatical errors. Overall I give this 4 out of 4 stars.
