World, Incorporated
By Tom Gariffo

World, Incorporated, by Tom Gariffo, was unfortunately all too believable for me. The book is set in 2058 where most governments of nation-states have disappeared, only to be replaced by super corporations. The corporations keep track on the populace, documenting everything.
The protagonist Agent Silver works for one of these corporations (World, Incorporated). The plot is set when Silver rescues the daughter of his latest target. I for one, became immediately engaged here because I began to wonder if this was the makings of a rogue agent or the beginning of a rebellion against the corporation(s). For Kelly, who previously had no idea how the world now operates, she was being taught by a computer of the new world order.
In general, I am not a fan of dystopian literature, but it was the short summary description that intrigued me and led me to request the book to review. I did find this all too believable. In general, I am apolitical, but given the current state of affairs in the US and especially in the White House and most importantly the cabinet, we are at an unfortunate tipping point where governing has been replaced by business and consumerism. I think this is truly time and prescient on the part of the author.
The book has a rough beginning. The exposition of the plot and the numerous characters is difficult for the author and it took me several times to start over again (and again) to keep everyone straight enough so that I could move on with the story. I don’t know that there would be any better way for the author to introduce the setting and characters, but the beginning felt a bit “klunky”. The action does pick up but watch for the occasional spot where the pacing slows to a crawl. Stay with it, though, it is well worth it.
World, Incorporated by Tom Gariffo has been labeled Sci-fi, Dystopian or both. If you pigeonhole the book into one or both of these genres, then I think you are doing the book a disservice. For me, this is one of those books where I could see past the science fiction and the dystopian landscape to see the message that the author was trying to convey. I haven’t had this happen too many times reading. This story is edgy, timely and if you think about it carefully enough it ought to make your skin crawl. I would rate this quality book 4 out of 4 stars.
