"'What a monumentally dumb plan,' Brad the fish complains."
THAT is how I feel about Fish Wielder.
Thoral Mighty Fist, musclebound hero, his koi fish Brad, & horse Warlordhorse set off on a final adventure so bored, depressed barbarian Thoral can seek a hero's death. His beautiful wife and beloved master have both been killed by Necrogrond, the evil sorcerer, and Thoral has nothing to live for, despite his many heroic adventures. With the help of elves, a talking fish, and various unsuspecting inept assassins, this combination headbanger and knight errant sets off to do good, save fair maidens, and hopefully get himself killed because he's so bored with it all.
This book advertised itself as funny, so I guess I had high expectations from the start. I just could not get into it, so it took me forever to review. Perhaps it was a 1st-time author's tendency to cram too much into one book. This author deserved a solid edit.
I thought Fish Wielder would be perfect for me: funny, fantasy, magic, evil sorcerers, middle ages theme, talking horse and fish, epic adventures on the road. I enjoy young adult fiction and fantasy novels, but as a girl this was just not my thing. Gore, blood, slime, mucus, vomit, various bodily fluids, comic book type violence show up throughout this comic novel, maybe making this more of a young guy's (teenage or older's) book: "The barbarian's only reply was a flood of vomit." Oh, joy.
The constant stream of blood, gore, and various bodily fluids in this one, by the way, was supposed to make the book funny or even more ridiculous. Nope, it was mostly stupid.
Here's the level of romance in this novel: Thoral saves an elf princess, Nalweegie, who falls in love with him and insists on going along on his adventures, proving to be more of a liability than anything else. She is good for a magical kiss or two, though: He checks her out for concussion; she thinks he's leaning in for a kiss.
After the 6th attempt to start this novel, I began to get into it. Finally began to appreciate the humor and absurdity. It's a parody, and sometimes they fall flat. It's a cross between a graphic novel in tone, w a superhero overlay and a bit of magic thrown in. A typical reader of The Onion would probably like this novel.
I'm going to guess that this would have better as a graphic novel, except for the fact that there are 47 chapters for 288 pages. With a solid edit, though, the book likely could be reformatted as a graphic novel.
RATING: 1 OUT OF 4 STARS.
Recommended if you are a teenage boy, in an absurd mood, or skeptical of reviews by total strangers anyway (lol).
