In the first installment of the Clockwork Chimera Series, Scott Baron’s novel, Daisy’s Run, thrusts the reader into a vibrant scene in a spaceship that has suffered from a mid-flight collision. Daisy is awoken abruptly from cryo-sleep by the artificial life form left to watch the ship. She and the rest of the crew struggle to shake off years of stasis in an instant to address serious damage done to the ship during their long haul back to Earth.

As one of the ship’s electronic and mechanical experts, she sets immediately to making life-saving repairs. Working alongside her crew mates, she begins to realize that the ship, the Vali, may be suffering from issues not entirely mechanical. Tensions rise as she also begins to modify her neuro-stim, a device used to trickle in new information as she sleeps. The trickle escalates to a flood as she risks irreparable insanity in order to know more, jeopardizing her relationships with the crew along the way.

Her paranoia rockets from a chronic lack of sleep; she can’t tell friend from foe as she erodes away the safeties on her neuro-stim. The pieces fall into place with her ever-improving problem-solving and she realizes a terrible truth.

The environment in this novel was immediately apparent. The author does a really nice, simple, and thorough job of placing the reader firmly and easily into the Vali. Even while most of the science, math, and physics were far above my comprehension, I still felt that I knew what was happening from moment to moment.

The character development was, by far, my favorite aspect. The various viewpoints were easily recognizable in quick moving and witty conversations. The author took strides to make the personalities of the crew relatable, while also giving them flaws and biases that make them believable.

I found myself gobbling up chapter after chapter, hungry for the next move Daisy would make. A great deal of the novel leaves you tense and bruised, but needing to know what happens next. My loyalty to the crew was tested constantly in this thrilling roller-coaster. As a fan of anything involving space and space travel, this kept my interest and I felt immersed in the world Scott Baron built.

I am ranking Daisy’s Run by Scott Baron as 4 out of 4 stars. The characters were easy to become absorbed in and the world felt familiar and real. The various personalities that meshed and clashed were so thoroughly entertaining to read. I have always been a fan of well-written dialogue and this novel definitely draws you in through every word. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of science fiction and outer space odysseys.
