When I picked the book Heaven and Earth by Dr Arturo Riojas for review I had great expectations that I would find some answers to the many intrigues of the expansive universe. Ever since my childhood I have been fascinated by outer space, extra-terrestrials and especially a need to find out where heaven actually is located. The book’s theme is an engaging, factual and very interesting sci-fi/allegory storyline revolving around alien visitors searching for a habitable planet to colonize, cadmium food poisoning and a dysfunctional human society threatened by increasing incidents of lifestyle diseases.

The author, an experienced professional engineer (chemical and civil), has witfully and skilfully managed to highlight a global life-threatening cadmium food-chain poisoning issue supported by scientific facts which reveal how vulnerable our bodies are to deadly products certified as healthy by unscrupulous, corrupt corporations and governmental agencies which we trust unquestionably.

We are what we eat. The increasing numbers of victims of lifestyle diseases like cancer and diabetes is well documented in the book; thereby informing the reader of the dangers in the food we eat. The book is based on well researched data and offers good advice on the cadmium poisoning issue making it an invaluable read and reference material especially for people concerned with their health and those already afflicted by lifestyle health conditions.

The book starts dramatically with an alien spacecraft from a planet, called Treretum, which is 8.6 lightyears from earth, hovering somewhere above Atlanta. Its inhabitants were very advanced in all aspects (intelligence, technology, government etc.) and had lifespans of over 2,000 years. The mission was a revisit to assess the viability of earth as a food supply colony to feed an exploding population in their home planet.

The extra-terrestrial characters are well developed and realistic with imaginative “earthly” names like Nivla (Alvin), Suturb (Brutus). The human characters, staff of the FDA, CDC, NASA, DHS and other reputable institutions, are well profiled. Societal problems (racial and tribal conflicts, corruption) on Treretum appear to be similar to those on earth.

I enjoyed reading chapter 7 (The Ancients) for its creativity, perception and narrative. Dr Riojas has intelligently visualized a realistic scenario in outer space which captures the attention of the reader triggering memory recall and comparison of previous knowledge: stories/movies about UFOs, Star Trek, inter-galactic odysseys and wars etc.

The alien encounter in chapter 12 (The Encounter) is one of the highlights in the book. Olga’s and Gavilán’s reactions are predictable but rather “too detailed” for such a situation: there isn’t enough shock. I would have expected extreme panic. In comparison Sam’s reaction to the same aliens in chapter 16 is more realistic. Judging by the conversation that followed, the characters recover too quickly: remember that humans have been searching for alien lifeforms for many years, spending millions of dollars, and have not even found micro-organisms in outer space.

I found the mixing of Spanish and English in speech disturbing and very distracting although for those who understand Spanish this may not be an issue.

This book can be beneficial to almost everyone since it has very useful dietary information/advice that may help reduce the progression of diet related health conditions. Unfortunately, the book has several grammatical errors: I hope that something will be done about this.

The book is a very good read. It has helped me understand many things about lifestyle diseases. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars.
