The book Becoming a Dragon by Alex Sapegin is the first book of a series of five books. It is a fictional story about Andy, a sixteen-year-old teenager, who gets transported into a time of dragons, orcs, elves, wizards, mages and other mystical creatures.

I did not know what to expect from this book. It was my first time reading this kind of genre. I choose it on a whim. I found the story line to be intriguing.

I liked how the author kept some situations in real time. For example, at the beginning of the story how the school kids were excited about the field trip into nature only to be greeted with litter everywhere and the smell of toilet that came from the bushes. I liked the way scientific subjects were clarified so they were understood. I liked Mr. Sapegin word usage. I looked up a lot of words, wanting to know the direct meaning so I could understand the complete sentence. The imagery in this book was fantastic. The trees were "woody titans, their treetops tickling the clouds" or "light blue ribbon of the river" and just one more, "A slight breeze, like a playful puppy began to break the fog." My favorite sentence in the book was "Andy left the banquet hall full of disappointed ants." Andy's body reconstruction was highly interesting. I enjoyed the relationship between Karegar the dragon and Jaga the elf.

What I disliked about this book was Andy's transitions were at times unclear. The country's history was long and hard to follow. There was too much supernatural religious history for me. It got confusing. At times the conversations were confusing between the different characters so that I had to reread them a few times to understand who was saying what. And why does a male character always have to hit his crotch during or after a fall?

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I didn't give it 2 stars because it is a good story overall and it held my attention until the end. I didn't give it 4 stars because it was a good story.

I enjoyed this story. I would recommend it as an interesting read even if you aren't really into fantasy stories. I think that this is a good young adult book. If this series were to be made for movies, I would definitely go see it.
