3 out of 4 stars for Becoming the Dragon
I have read and am writing a review on the book Becoming the Dragon. The book takes awhile to read. I am a busy person and didnt devote too much time to the story so it took me a little past deadline to finish the book. However, it is a great book for waiting in doctors offices or other times when you will be disturbed, The way it broken into chapters and the way it was modified for Amazon books, simplifies the stopping and starting again process. I prefer paperbacks, but Becoming the Dragon was a good experience even on my phone. As stated, it was mostly read in short bursts in waiting periods. Yet, it did a good job of passing time and was not to complicated to pick back up and remember what was going on. I have read books that cannot be read in this manner due to the complexity of the plot. Therefore, I was impressed with the writing style and continued to finish the book despite the predictable plot.
This story is a typical becoming of age story about a young boy with a little sister and a dog. The boy becomes a typical “chosen one” like the stories of Harry Potter, Percy and the Lightening thief, and countless others. The main character, Andy, is a young adult or teenager who follows the path toward finding his chosen calling. As the title suggests he starts becoming the dragon. Without giving spoilers, there isn’t much more details to be given in this summary. As the Amazon summary states, “Having unwittingly stumbled into the site of a scientific experiment, Andy gets teleported to the faraway planet of Ilanta, inhabited by both human and supernatural beings” (2018). This new world is full of the adventures and challenges that matures him and prepares him for his ultimate quest of reincarnating as a dragon.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, because it was an easy and interesting read. There were times when it was too drawn out, but the action does pick up and regain interest. It does not rate a four because it is highly predictable and too similar to many other tales. Yet, it is still worth the read and not badly written, so it rates more than two out of the four. The story is well written, and others also enjoy the book from fellow reviews. Not to mention, there are more books in the series. I am most likely going to read the next book, Wings on my Back.
I think this book was appeal most to young adults who can relate to the main character and any others who enjoy coming of age stories. Amazon has this story and the other books in the series. It appears that the second and third book, A Cruel Tale, is also followed by a fourth and fifth book. This would be a great series for a teen looking for a series to get into. Overall, Becoming the Dragon is a good book. It is a great quest for the reader to begin.
