The Different Kinds Of Monsters by SETH CHAMBERS is an interesting piece. It's flavoured with history, thriller, romance and adventure in a scintillating pattern. Although it starts off a little bit uninteresting, the build up is progressive and captivating. It portrays the experiences of a man named Dylan fascinated by dinosaurs from childhood to adulthood. With a family always on the road for one reason or the other due to supposed reckless actions by his father, Dylan found his childhood strangely marred by the presence of a particular dinosaur fossil called Emily. Wherever they went Emily always seemed to follow. Along the journey from Dylan being a boy obsessed with dinosaurs and Emily in particular, to him being an adult with his own family, a host of challenges are overcome. Eventually, the mystery behind their connection with Emily is revealed.
The book is written in third person narrative and each character is very well articulated. Surprisingly, even Emily isn't left out as the dinosaurs perspective is beautifully illustrated. A combination of humour and suspense keeps the story lively and interesting. Most chapters are short and the diction is great. The book is a mini history lesson on the age on dinosaurs, i never knew i could be so happy learning about the various species of dinosaurs. Also, it's spiked with action, adventure and a tiny bit of fantasy. The story is well built and easily relatable.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. My rating is so because I found the story captivating, the language and diction great, the balance of humour and suspense beautiful and the ending satisfactory. I'm not giving it a 1 or 2 because it was a good read. Some books start great and end up boring in the middle, it started a little bit uninteresting and muddled up but built up incredibly fast and well. At first I wasn't sure I'd finish it but I was hooked and glued a few chapters in. Also, at some point i felt like i was reading romance, at another? Adventure, I loved this feeling. I'm not rating it 4 out of 4 because however satisfactory, I found the ending just a little bit abrupt. Also, it had a couple of errors at some important instances which was kind of annoying.
In addition, the characters were few so it was easy following them up, it made me feel like another member of the family. They also represented a distinct idea and this made it all the more intriguing.
Overall, like I stated earlier, this book was a good read. It was captivating and thrilling. I'll recommend this book to literally everyone, especially those who like learning just as much as reading. Also it's a good read for romance book lovers. Thumbs up Seth!
