Heaven and Earth by Arturo Riojas is a book with a mission. The author explains that his motivation in writing this book was to have it serve as a medium for explaining the dangers of chromium poisoning, which he sees as a major health issue affecting the entire planet. The book tells of the meeting and interaction between people from earth and the inhabitants of a planet circling the Sirius star system. In order to present all the facts and figures concerning chromium poisoning without burdening readers who are not interested in a great amount of detail, the author presents this information separately at the end of each chapter. Even if the reader elects to skip these pages, he will learn enough in the course of the story to make him give consideration to his diet.
Egral Egroeg is leading the third mission from his planet to earth. The purpose of this mission is to evaluate the progress mankind has made, based on information left by previous missions. They are supposed to remain unseen. However, one of the crew has a private issue to resolve, and he contacts Olga and Gavilan to enlist their aid. Soon the earthlings and aliens are exchanging information and assistance. In the course of this, Olga and Gavilan learn how the power structure is acting on the basis of greed, rather than the people's welfare. Doctors and drug manufacturers are making a great deal of money selling drugs that treat symptoms, rather than attacking the cause of the problems. They also learn that those in power will stop at nothing to prevent a change in the existing system. Will the government step in to put a stop to this abuse?
Between the information at the end of each chapter and that contained in the story itself, we learn a great deal about cadmium poisoning, the fact that cadmium is present in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breath, and the many harmful effects it has on the body. On a personal note, I realize that most of my diet consists of things the author warns can be high in cadmium. I also note that several of my health issues are ones the author relates to cadmium poisoning.
One thing I especially appreciated is that the author allowed Gavilan to make comments in Spanish, but then provides a translation. I liked the main characters, both human and alien, and the way that their acquaintance progressed to friendship, and finally led to revelation of the ultimate goal of the governments of both planets. The characters are interesting, and one becomes concerned about what happens to them. I also appreciated the way that the detailed information is separated out at the ends of the chapters. To have tried to incorporate all of that into the story line would have been difficult, and would have become boring.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason I could not give it 4 stars is that I found several typos and punctuation errors.
