Heaven and Earth is a fascinating science-fiction story written by Arturo Riojas about aliens, cadmium poisoning, and the secrets of the government.

This book starts with aliens from the star system Sirius on an assignment to observe and collect data from the Earth. These green-skinned aliens are fascinated by the characteristics of the “earthlings” and have a hard time understanding why humans act the way that they act and live the way that they live.

Back on earth, the government is trying to hide the fact that there is life outside of the planet. Dr. Ramos begins to be tracked and spied on by the Department of Homeland Security after she reveals that she is researching the existence of alien life. Later, Dr. Ramos and her boyfriend Cuauhtemoc Gavilan go to Area 51 to try to find out about what US officials are hiding from the community. The government is also trying to hide the dangers of cadmium and heavy metals in foods to protect companies and industries. Dr. Welch and Sam claim to have been bribed to hide the information from their research on cadmium consumption and the dangers of metals in the things we eat.

This book tells about many other problems in the way that earth’s society operates. Sucram Suturb, an alien from the Sirius star system, reports to the mission commander Egroeg about how earthlings do things for personal gain without thinking about the effect that they have on others around them. Sucram also finds that humans on earth suffer from self-inflicted injuries and maladies, such as how earthlings consume large amounts of sweets and attain health issues.

In addition to the fantasy of this book, Dr. Arturo Riojas gives facts on cadmium poisoning at the end of every chapter, educating the reader very well about cadmium and its dangers. Dr. Riojas even incorporates the dangers of cadmium into a metaphoric story with microscopic invaders representing cadmium and aliens representing the people impacted by it.

I gave Heaven and Earth 2 out of 4 stars. This book was excellent in educating the reader about cadmium poisoning, but could be very confusing and boring at times. Many times, the story was hard to follow and I could not understand what was going on. Also, the book had many instances where Riojas just put a list of facts into a character’s dialogue, which I really did not want to read.

The thing I most liked about this book was the amount of knowledge it gave me on cadmium and how it can affect my health. I learned a lot of information about heavy metals and some foods that contain high amounts of it.

My least favorite part was a section where one of the characters were just spewing out a social science lesson. I nearly skipped over that whole chapter because it was so uninteresting.

Heaven and Earth had a few grammatical and spellings errors, which slightly impacted my score.

I would recommend Heaven and Earth only to people who are interested in health and nutrition, as it would provide good learning.
