“I didn’t do it,” started Delvin. “I don’t know what happened. I can’t seem to remember anything.” The Magician’s Secret: The Coming of Age of a Magician written by Charles Townsen is book 1 out of these 5 part series that brings you into this early era fantasy world. In the first book we are introduced to the main characters, one of which is Delvin, a young magician who is not ready for the world that he is being brought into; it all started when he became a magician, and his life wouldn’t be the same. He goes on a journey throughout towns, and different cities in order to help save the day. What is very interesting about this novel is how the author added in multiple images/ pictures with descriptions of the layout of the lands. The author created physical maps that detail mountains, rivers, and bridges of the two major cities in the book. As the main characters go on their journey, the reader is able to go on the journey with the characters and create an image in their minds eye of what is happening as they follow along. Even with the maps the author uses very detailed language where you feel you are pulled right into this fantasy world of princesses, magic, horse carriages, and more. This book describes a good vs evil scenario where the main character has to help the good guys in order for the good of all the people. The author brings in the idea of magic tricks, slight of hand, fortune telling, and love potions into the mix. There is minimal sexual content in this novel, it is more up to the imagination of the reader. Where the author goes into minimal detail of a man and women going to bed together, and then waking up the next morning, so not too much sexual details there. However, there were some mentions of a kiss here and there in the story, but very much a don’t kiss and tell vibe. There was mention of profanity with the term whore. There were very minimal grammatical errors in this story. I would rate this series a 5 out of 5. I greatly enjoyed all the magic tricks, and twists and turns in this story. As a reader I couldn’t put the book down, and needed to know what happened next. Any readers who love magic as much as I do should start reading this series. I already need to know what happens in book 2. At the end of book 1 it does leave you hanging, and I am left with all these questions.
