Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison is an exciting tale about Thoral Might Fist, and his sidekick Brad the talking Koi fish. Thorals few comforts in life are large quantities of alcohol, his sword passed to him by his mentor Yiz and adventuring. Fortunately for him, the world of Grome is in grave danger, the Heartless One and the Bad Religion are out to find the Lost Pudding of Power. Thoral and Brad find themselves on a journey to stop the enslavement of Grome by embarking on a whirlwind adventure full of magic and shenanigans.
It is nonstop from beginning to end, and rarely is there a dull moment. There are so many twists and turns that you never know exactly how our hero will triumph over evil. Where Thoral struggles, Brad fills in with wit and over all common sense, making him the best Fish friend a barbarian could ask for. This is an interesting parody on so many of the titles we have grown to love and read over the years. Its incorporation of small loving jabs at all the things we expect from a fantasy novel, is what gives it a Monty Python or Mel Brooks feel. The author uses humor and wit to keep the novel fun and light hearted even when things look bleak.
What I enjoyed most about this book, is the humor and outlandishness of it all. Who knew that a sweet chocolaty pudding could be the downfall of an entire world? There is an extreme amount of creativity used to make the characters and even minor acquaintances lovable. The fast pace of the book makes for an epic and entertaining ride.
This silly, fast pace is also where I feel the book has its’ very slight downfall. It’s like being on a very long roller coaster, it’s exciting; but at some point towards the end the loops are not really all that surprising anymore. For me, it was like getting too much of a good thing. It didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat. It was easy for me to put down, and not pick up again for a few days. With that being said, I think that this might exactly be the kind of book my teenage son would enjoy, something that grabs his attention span, and never let him go. The slap stick humor and wit are something that he would thoroughly enjoy.
I rate The Fish Wielder 3 out of 4 stars. Even though this book didn’t fully grab my attention, I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good laugh, crazy plots and an excellent fantasy.
