Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty, dubbed a “space adventure” by the author, is more like a cosmic bust. I found McNulty’s characters undeveloped and the plot predictable.

The plot is confusing from the start. To generalize, the story is about a group of heroes that travel on a space mission to collect treasure that may or may not save a planet. It reads stale from the beginning, as it seems we have all read this plot before. Events are promising as the heroes land on many new planets, but the author repeatedly misses the opportunity to develop these new environments.

In addition to a dull plot, McNulty’s characters lack development. There is little background provided to explain why her characters behave the way they do. The author means to drop hints about physical appearance (mainly by using color to describe hair and skin tone) but never provides full descriptions. This causes confusion when she tries to find alternative ways to identify who is talking by referencing their appearance in some way. Worse, many of the personalities introduced were not likable. The main character reads as spoiled and obnoxious and ultimately, I found myself rooting against her.

The most egregious additions to the book were the illustrations. I was reading on a kindle and the formatting was such that text would wrap the images. The design felt intrusive and further, the illustrations did not jive with the pictures painted by the author’s written words. When I finished the book there was a note to “complete the Solaris experience with the companion coloring book”. This made me curious to see if it was an adult or a child’s coloring book. (A child’s coloring book might have provided an explanation for the book as a whole, as maybe I had the target audience incorrect after reading the book summary.) After following the link, it proved to be an adult coloring book, which left me scratching my head once again.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The book had few grammatical errors, which saved it from a “1” rating. The book was a simple read with short sentences. I believe young teens at a high reading level might find Solaris Seethes interesting. For science fiction fans that enjoy whimsical characters and a suspenseful narrative, the book was lacking. I found Solaris Seethes underwhelming at best and will not be reading the next book in the series.
