The Redemptress by Adrian Bourdy is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it for young adults who enjoy long adventures in space that are full of amazing plot twists and turns!

I gave this a four out of five for its storyline. Just as the plot of the book is well done, the characters are full of life and personality. Most characters have clear faults and beliefs that seem to grow as the story continues. The author does a wonderful job of creating an immersive story that catches the reader’s attention, making the reader root for specific characters. Not everything is as it seems, ensuring the reader keeps questioning ‘what’s next?’ and continues reading the book.

The story does seem to start off fast, then switches to a slower pacing. There are times when the story seems to skip ahead entirely timewise and doesn’t entirely seem to fit the timeline inside one’s mind. While the editing of the story wasn’t perfect, it was extremely well done. Some of the characters – before they meet each other – seem to know the other’s name before they are introduced to each other. Some points of view do not matter in the greater context of the story; while they lend some flavor to the plot, they are not entirely needed.

There are parts that I was unsure about. Some readers may like waiting for definitions of some words that the author put in there while some may not enjoy that wait. The author also does not elaborate on some of the pronunciations of some of the words that the reader may not enjoy trying to sound out.

All in all, The Redemptress has its own unique take on what may have been just another space adventure. The plot turns were delightful, and the ending was a genuine surprise. It is an amazing book that should be read by those who enjoy being surprised by an author in the way that I was.
