The North Factor by Ben Schneider is an action-packed story of vengeance. After setting out to visit an ailing friend, Sonya Radisson fights through multiple kidnappings, a corrupt state hospital for the criminally insane, and a bloodthirsty motorcycle club. Traveling state to state and doing her best to keep a low profile, Sonya tries to find out about her friend’s well-being and who is behind her kidnapping while just trying to make it back home to her husband in Colorado.

Although this is the second in a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. Despite having not read the first book, I never felt confused about what was going on or like I had missed important pieces of the story, even though there is some carryover from one book to the next. The storyline is unrealistic in a fun, action-movie manner, even introducing a sci-fi-style vanishing act. The non-stop action keeps the story moving and provides plenty of mysteries to be solved.

This is a book in which the evil characters are full-on evil and the good characters aim to do only good. Sonya is a little difficult to pin down at times. She can be a bit rough in the way she deals with other characters, often letting her frustrations get the best of her even when she is in perilous situations. Unlike many action heroes, Sonya often makes mistakes that put her in danger and seem as though they could have been easily avoided had she simply spent more time questioning the circumstances. Her lack of thoughtfulness is especially surprising, considering her past.

The North Factor would appeal to readers who enjoy action movies and thrillers. Those looking for a realistic story would find this book too far-fetched. Because Schneider’s writing style is easy to read and because of the continual action of the story, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed reading it but also found myself able to put it down for a couple of days. I found Sonya and her decisions to be trying at times, but I did enjoy the many mysteries.
