Heaven and Earth is a science fiction novel by Arturo Riojas. Heaven and Earth discusses the parallels of two planets, Treretum and Earth, treating the symptoms of an affliction rather than eliminating the cause. In the United States of America two pairs of individuals, Olga and Gavilán from the west and Dr. Welch and Sam from the east come in contact after a government sanctioned convention that puts their lives in danger. Their time together leads them to the discovery of a Treretumian named Nivla. Nivla helps guide the Earthlings path onto making the Earth a better place for the future by providing them with wisdom of how to effectively change the minds of the world's people.
I found that the facts the author included at the end of each chapter brought both depth to the story and gave you something substantial to apply in the real world. All of the characters had their own personalities and weren't overshadowed by the other characters. The author definitely did his research and like was stated in the novel several times, cadmium poisoning is something that everyone should know about. I like the way the author named the aliens, some of the aliens names served an interesting purpose as they reflected the beings temperament.
The author has a tendency to over explain things. It might just be his style but taking paragraphs just to describe the action of sitting in a chair is just pointless. For the most part, the dialogue for the novel was well written however sometimes characters would explain what something is in the middle of a sentence when they are speaking which ruins the conversations flow. All the characters of importance in the novel are educated well beyond college level so there is no real reason for them to explain anything to the other characters.
I am not a master of writing or of language by any means but even I was able to spot multiple grammar errors in this novel meaning it can't have been edited professionally. Some words were mashed together instead of hyphenated, some words were replaced with homophones of said word like having "axes" instead of "axis" in relation of a planet spinning. And there were still other words that needed to be removed, like extra articles, or were needed to edited because the tense was wrong or the word was wrong.
With all said and done I rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars. I believe that the message should be shared and the story was well thought out and planned regardless of the grammar errors present and run on sentences. I would like to say that anyone could read this book and get something out of it but I think that it would be better presented to people age 20-30 who have been educated enough to find the facts substantial and just finding their way in the world which enables them to spread the message better.
