Heaven and Earth is a story about two worlds - the alien and human world and how secrets kept by authorities on health and discovery brought them together. "It is a story involving different kinds of races. For the space travelers, it is a race against time and a message traversing the vast emptiness of space at the speed of light. For Earthlings, it is a race to reverse an environmental tailspin leaving death in its wake." This book tells about several individuals( Earthlings) in the likes of Olga Ramos, Billy Ruben and Gavilán, and the discoveries they made about the secrets hidden by the government on space travels and health care. Billy Ruben, a doctor who finds about the several cases of Cadmium Poisoning in the human daily diet which seemed to be secrets hidden by the government agency NASA. Olga, an aeronautical engineer who was more interested in the cause rather than effects of things and also in finding the existence of life outside earth. Gavilán an Engineer who had background beliefs in the existence of aliens (the teachers as introduced by the writer). These three worked together discovering the hidden truths about their whole existence, death and life altogether.
Since honesty is a priority, I would say the title really does capture the story behind it. The Treretumians regarded as Heaven (as from the book) and the humans - Earthlings as introduced by the writer - regarded as Earth.
From the story line, it was pretty clear to understand that it's center focus was on the element Cadmium and it's 'unknown' effects. The writer did well on so many occasions talk about the effects of cadmium and its presence in several kinds of things most people probably didn't know were possible. I myself was really convinced(still might consider making some dietary changes haha). With the purposes of the book afore mentioned by the writer, I would say the first part was really covered - To disseminate information about the health issues related to Cadmium Poisoning.
At the start of the story, I immediately fell in love with the Olga and Gavilán characters. Now they brought in some entertainment to the story. Gavilán who I presume was originally meant to be the more jovial and supposedly funny one did do well on his part. Olgá, the Engineer without a spouse meets the easy going Gavilán and they immediately get a connection. This seemed pretty interesting at first but then in later chapters, their relationship became more of an indefinite one. At some point it was hard to tell if their relationship was a romantic one or work and discovery related only. However, it did turn out to be a romantic relationship in later chapters like 18 where they had a kissing scene. Based on this, I would say the periods and events leading to this weren't well portrayed by the writer. Their relationship could've been defined as a friendly one had I not gotten to see later chapters. The status of their relationship was completely vague and though the book wasn't meant to be a romance novel, with the little romance intended I feel there could be more done to clearly define Olga and Gavilán's relationship.
Down to alien characters, there was also a lot of complications which made understanding their main role in the story difficult. An example is the Muimdac species as were mentioned. The only definite thing about them was that they were playing offensive, waging war against the Treretumians. Down to what they actually looked like, there was no given detail as to aid the readers imagination, besides the fact that they were microscopic. I really think this needs to be looked into. Some spell checks also need to be done as well as making a clear distinction between the various languages introduced in the book.
I give this book a 2 out of 4 This was supposedly a Sci-fi book but very little of that was portrayed in this book. The writer did do well on writing about Cadmium Poisoning so I would say that's a plus.
