Cancer, Alzheimer's, and Diabetes; chances are many of us have heard of these illnesses or even know of someone who suffers one or more of them. However, is it possible that all of these illnesses could potentially be caused by the same factor? Heaven and Earth, a science fiction novel, written by Arturo Riojas goes into further depth with this intriguing question. Having been afflicted with the pain of having a loved one diagnosed with cancer, Arturo Riojas claims, "the time is now to address the cause rather than the symptom. If only I had known then what I know now about cadmium."
Top secret facilities, government cover-ups, and high-speed car chases are just some of the adventures Olga and Gavilan partake of in this science fiction novel. However, even these cannot compare to their unexpected encounter with highly intelligent beings from another planet. Though they are of two different worlds, Olga and Gavilan befriend these extraterrestrial beings, finding that their goals are the same, to expose the major issue of morality over governmental influence. Is it right for those in power to hide a potentially lethal secret from society simply for financial gain? The main characters confront many dangers to expose the truth before it is too late.
I commend Arturo Riojas for his creativity to incorporate the issue of cadmium poisoning into a science fiction novel. He uses very discreet ways to explain where cadmium can be found and why. Be sure to pay special attention to what his main characters avoid eating during meal times. I also appreciated the facts about cadmium that he presented at the end of every chapter.
However, despite Arturo's creativity, I have rated this book 2 out of 4 stars. There was an overwhelming amount of information throughout the book and not all of it was completely relevant to the overall story. Although I usually enjoy reading science fiction, it is difficult to make these stories truly believable. I don't think the author was able to bring his characters to life in my own imagination.
I would suggest for the author to begin the book with his human characters. Once we get to know them, then he could allow the reader to discover this new alien species alongside Olga and Gavilan. Being introduced to the new species right away was part of what made the book hard to believe and even overwhelming with all the new information. I would also recommend avoiding cliches such as Area 51.
Though I myself did not thoroughly enjoy this book, perhaps someone who is a health activist or is researching potential causes of certain illnesses will benefit from this novel. Heaven and Earth is full of intriguing information, but does require further research in order to understand certain material. I would not recommend this book for someone simply reading for entertainment or recreational purposes.
