One scientist hates the United States so much that he has produced a virus to eradicate all people. His virus does not perform to his expectations but has reduced the United States of America to the Seven Cities of America. If he has his way there will be no America left. In case he does not live long enough to accomplish his goal he takes on an apprentice who he hopes will follow in his footsteps.
One day a man arrives from one of the tribes to the scientist’s city. This man has a plan to drive the cities into extinction. There is fighting both internal and external in an attempt to reach that goal. He pits men and entire cities against each other. He seems to be able to influence people to do what he wants them to do.
Rebuilding finally begins in The Last City of America. Hard feelings between refugees of cities that no longer exist begin to escalate and bring about another rebellion. More death and destruction ensue.
The explanation at the beginning of the book is essential to understanding what has brought the country to where it is and how long it took to get to that point. It lays the groundwork to understanding how the people came to be in cities or farms and how the governmental system was established.
Each chapter is divided by character and gives the reader the ability to see the person grow and mature. Each person has their flaws and insecurities which enabled them to be influenced by others. It also showed the degree that people will go to in order to seek vengeance.
It is easy to envision this apocalypse taking place. Scientists develop viruses everyday as a new way to fight diseases or create new weapons of war. Some are developed in order to find cures for other illnesses. It would be easy enough for one scientist, that hates America enough, to develop one that would reduce this country to nothing.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. There is enough action and suspense to keep the reader’s attention to the point they will not want to put the book down. The reader will want to know what their favorite character is going to do next and to see who will make it out alive. Anyone who enjoys reading about adventure, war and survival would enjoy reading The Last City of America.
