Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first book in a series of science fiction novels called the Solaris Saga. The main character, Rynah, is the driving force of this book as she embarks on a journey to save the universe and seek revenge.

The story begins with Rynah facing an awful betrayal and fleeing as her home planet, Laynr is destroyed. Here, the revenge comes in, as the man who is seeking to destroy the universe is the man who was supposed to be in love with Rynah. As Rynah narrowly escapes aboard her grandfather's ship, she is faced with the impossible task of saving everything she has ever known. The story follows a group of characters who travel to the different sectors of the universe and collect crystals, which hold the power to destroy or preserve the universe they live in.

This book does a lot of things well in terms of story, plot, and how the author keeps the reader interested. The biggest thing that turned me away from this book was the writing style itself and the bland characters. The action was amazing, the fight scenes were meticulously thought out and it really brought them to life in my head. The ship, created by Rynah’s grandfather to have a conscience and behave like a humanoid figure, is interesting technology that I can only imagine existing. The different sectors of her universe all being connected, what a wild concept! If not for the negative aspects of this book, I don’t think I would have been able to put it down.

As for the negatives, I felt a certain rambling feeling as I read this. It was similar to reading an essay where the student has a word count to meet. Some sections had more detail than anything else and it swallowed the story. Other sections seemed really abrupt and unclear, but before I knew it, we were pushing onwards into the narrative. There are also a number of minor inconsistencies and errors in regards to the editing of this book. While the author uses onomatopoeia (“pow”, “slam!”) to highlight some of the action and movement, she doesn’t do this all the time. The author also doesn’t consistently use the same font graphics. Sometimes the words are italicized, sometimes they aren’t, which can be distracting while reading.

While the story was interesting to follow, the excessive descriptions bogged down the reading experience, the characters were undeveloped and showed little to no growth, and there were a number of grammatical errors. In addition to the grammatical errors, there was also a misuse of dashes and parentheses. With that, I would rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. I feel as though the negative attributes far out way the good ones in the case of this book. I had a hard time staying “in” the book and enjoying it because it felt very rushed and not all that different from other science fiction books I had read before.
